Oaks return Hazel and Guglielmelli, who shared time at quarterback last year

Menlo College opened its fall training camp on Friday with its top running back and two top quarterbacks returning.

Junior Adam Hazel and sophomore Dustin Guglielmelli are both expected to see action at least through the first few games of the season as the Oaks hope to improve on their 2-7 mark of a year ago.

Hazel passed for 1,131 yards and eight touchdowns while Guglielmelli threw for 927 yards and seven touchdowns.

Sophomore Eddie Connor ran for 518 yards and scored two of Menlo's three rushing touchdowns.

Sophomore Kevin Lyle is the top returning receiver with 22 catches for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Grads Marvin Stickel, Russ Fukushima and Joey Risi combined for 108 of Menlo's 195 receptions last year and 1,273 of the 2,097 receiving yards.

Shoring up the defense, which allowed an average of 36.6 points and 403.2 yards per game in 2004, is at the top of the list for coach Mark Kaanapu and his staff.

"We're optimistic about the season, but with the first game approaching, we need to get in and evaluate our talent and goals quickly," Kaanapu said.

The Oaks open at McMurray University in Abilene, Texas on Sept. 3 at 2 p.m. Pacific time. The site was also moved from the Indians' off-campus facility, Shotwell Stadium, to Indian Stadium.

Menlo opens at home on Sept. 10 against Humboldt State at 12:30 p.m.

Defensibe back John North led the Oaks with 57 tackles last year, while senior defensive back Galen Perry will be counted upon for leadership. Junior Michael Johnson adds depth and talent to the secondary.

The Oaks currently have 90 players in camp.
