TROOP TURNS 50 . . .After years of hiking, river rafting, camping and climbing, not to forget feeding the homeless and providing disaster relief, Boy Scout Troop 206 of Menlo Park/Atherton is ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary this month. Troop 206 has varied in size over the last half century, from six to 106 members, but has been steadfast in providing various public services, including an annual canned food drive (last year's gathered more than two tons of food), and earthquake relief during the Loma Prieta, among other service programs. The event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 300 Ravenswood Ave. in Menlo Park. Presentations, displays, a slide show and guest appearances from past members will be part of the celebration. For more information, visit http://bsat206.best.vwh.net.

MANAGE $ FOR COLLEGE . . .On Saturday, the East Palo Alto nonprofit organization College Track will host a workshop on financial aid for students and parents. Karla Monterroso, a student life program manager and certified group facilitator with College Track, will be the keynote speaker. Monterroso will lead participants through an in-depth, hands-on look into the standard components of financial aid for college and introduce the concept of self-advocacy. The workshop, which is being held in conjunction with the Admissions Academy, a Bay Area college counseling consultant, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cubberley Community Center Auditorium, 4000 Middlefield Road. To register for the free workshop, call the Admissions Academy at 463-5530.

FIGHTEN' WORDS . . .The Palo Alto High School Debate Institute is busy this week hosting a five-day debate camp for middle and high school students. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, successful debaters from Paly, Stanford University and UC Berkeley are showing the interested participants the ropes. The purpose of the camp is to help attract new members for Paly's traveling debate team, which only has three members and is struggling financially because of school budget cuts. "On the national circuit, the Midwest and East Coast have huge teams. The Bay Area should also follow this trend and produce more competitive debaters," said Anjali Albuquerque, Paly's debate president. All profit goes toward the high school's team. For more information, call Bob Eberhardt, the camp's parent administrator, at 315-8603.
