New commissioners named
New commissioners named
(July 27, 2005) Weekly columnist Daryl Savage and Winifred Lew, a retired manager with Lockheed Martin, were appointed Monday night to the city's Human Relations Commission.
Nine persons applied for two spots on the newly controversial commission, which was recently assigned the police oversight role. The vacancies were created when two commissioners resigned, partially due to the new oversight responsibility.
The City Council did not interview either Savage or Lew this month because both were out of town. In her written application, Savage said she wants to help the commission assure that "all people are treated fairly and with respect" by police.
Savage, who writes the Weekly's Shop Talk column, received six votes for the post. Lew, who volunteers with the American Association of University Women, received five votes. She did not mention the police issue in her application but said she was interested in helping bring about an equality of representation, "regardless of racial and sexual differences."
Meanwhile, Bonnie Packer, who served on the Planning and Transportation Commission for six years, was not reappointed. Instead, the council unanimously picked Daniel Garber, a management consultant, and Paula Sandas, a retired attorney. The second vacancy was created when Michael Griffin decided not to apply for reappointment.
