SOCCER TRIP . . . The Palo Alto Pulse 14-under Class I CYSA soccer team will be in Sweden on Monday to begin its two-week tour highlighted by participation in the competitive Norway Cup. The team, coached by Tim Ryerson, will use its week in Sweden to play exhibition matches, practice and, of course, sight-see. Seven of the 19 team members are students at Jordan Middle School: Grant Audet, Orion Foley, Alex Freeman, Ryan Holland, Daniel Jones, Philip MacQuitty and Ethan Plant. There are also four Terman students: Greg Albrecht, Miles Mathews, Paul Morimoto and Sam Zeif. Other team members include Nick Hutter, Tyler Moragne and Ned Walecka of Hillview; Varun Nagarajan of Jane Lathrop Stanford; Josh Newby of Menlo; Eric Safai of Egan; Brendan Ruh and Christoph Bono. Ryerson's brother, Rich Ryerson, runs RRS Travel out of Kinna, Sweden and offers an international youth soccer tour as part of his business. The highlight of the first week just may be the new wooden roller coaster (Balder) at the Liseberg Amusement Park which features a 70 degree drop, or perhaps the slower Kanonen coaster, which opened in April.
MENLO MEMO . . . Menlo College junior Sara Fulp-Allen , who won the U.S. Senior Women's Wrestling Nationals at 105 pounds earlier this year, will compete at the World University Games in Izmur, Turkey beginning Aug. 11. Fulp-Allen earned a silver medal at the recently concluded FILA Junior World Women's Wrestling Championships in Vilnius, Lithuania, losing in the finals to Russian Olympian Lorissa Oorzak, who was fifth in Athens. "Sara had a very good tournament," USA coach Shannyn Gillespie said. "She wrestled well against the Olympian from Russia. Sara is ready to compete at the highest level right now. She is an impact wrestler." . . . Menlo College third baseman Amanda Colon and catcher Jessica Courson were named to the Association of Division III Independents Softball first team, and shortstop Michelle Hirabayashi was accorded honorable mention status . . . Menlo College product Jimmy Goethals, an NCAA Division III All-West Region second team selection in the spring, has appeared in 11 games with the Tri-City Valley Cats, a Single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. The catcher is batting .226 with a home run and three RBI.
