DIAMOND NOTE . . . The Palo Alto Heat 14-under ASA Junior Olympic "B" All-Star girls' fastpitch softball team took first place in the July 16&17 USSSA/ASA qualifier at Twin Creeks. Palo Alto defeated the San Lorenzo Rebels 3-0 in the semifinals. In the championship game the PA heat defeated a strong Mountain View team 5-3. Annie Lada earned the win for Palo Alto, pitching six shut out innings. Pam Wong scored the go ahead run on a suicide squeeze by Rachael Fleischmann. Other team members include Allie Coleman, Kristen Dauler, Jackie McElaney, Kelly McKenna, Shoshana Mitchell, Kimberly Noble, Melanie Paulson, and Taylor Ramsey.


AT THE NET . . .
Stanford grad David Martin and his doubles partner Jeremy Wurtzman reached the finals of the USTA Futures of Peoria tennis tournament on Sunday, before losing, 6-3, 7-6 (7). Martin also advanced to the quarterfinals in the singles competition while Stanford grad Scott Lipsky lost in the first round. Lipsky is at the Singha Tennis Classic in Tarzana this week . . . Stanford product Teryn Ashley and doubles partner Julie Ditty lost in the championship match of the YUM! Brabds/Pepsi-Cola tournament in Louisville . . . Menlo School grad Tiffany Lee reached the finals in each the singles competition and doubles of the Cal Open Women's Championship at Seascape Swim and Tennis Club in Aptos on Sunday. Lee, a sophomore at California, lost to Yulia Rivelis, 6-1, 6-0, in the singles title match and then teamed with Rivelis in doubles. Rivelis and Lee lost in the doubles final, 6-3, 6-3 . . . Menlo School senior Katie Bouret reached the finals of the Mills College Junior Open in Oakland on Friday before losing to Taskeen Bains, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in girls' 16 singles. Bouret beat Noelle Eades, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to reach the championship. Menlo Park resident Max Glenn defeated Mico Santiago, 6-3, 6-3, to win the boys' 14 singles title.


COACHING CORNER . . . Palo Alto High is looking for a varsity girls' basketball coach for the 2005-06 season and a varsity baseball coach for the 2006 season. Hoops coach Amy Stock is stepping down after four seasons, the first three which ended in league championships. Her 2003 squad finished 23-7 and reached the CCS semifinals for the first time in school history.
