WATER POLO CHAMPS . . . Stanford Water Polo Club members Douglas Wigley, Matt Hudnall, Ben Hohl, Jimmie Sandman, Dylan Mobley, Tyler Smith and Ryan McCarthy helped the Pacific squad capture the gold medal at last weekend's national Age Group Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The Pacific team defeated Long Beach Shore in the title match, 6-5. Smith scored the game-winning goal with a man advantage with 2:42 left in the match. Sandman, voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player, preserved the victory by blocking a penalty shot with 2:26 to play. Sandman will be a freshman at Stanford this fall. The championship game victory avenged a 7-5 loss to Long Beach Shore in the quarterfinals. Stanford finished 5-1-1 in the tournament . . . The Stanford Water Polo Club will be competing in three different tournaments this weekend. The most prestigious is the Commerce Invitational, where the Stanford A squad will feature Ian Bausback, Brian Beneditti, Brian Bishop, Patrick Connors, Alex Dunlevie, Gregor Horstmeyer, Brandon Johnson, Matt Johnson, Michael Orton plus Smith, Mobley and Wigley. Stanford also will send three teams to the Santa Barbara Tournament and four squads to the Danville Tournament. The NorCal Water Polo Club and Stanford Water Polo will have teams entered this weekend in the Women's 20 & Under National Championships in Mission Viejo.
TRACK MASTERS . . . the 2005 USATF Pacific Association Masters Track & Field Championships will be Saturday at Los Gatos High. The approximate time schedule has race walking at 8:15 a.m., followed by hurdles at 9:15 a.m. Field events begin at 9 a.m. The only event not held at Los Gatos will be the men's hammer, set for Stanford's Cobb Track & Angell Field at 2 p.m. Expected to head that field is 1984 Olympian Ed Burke, who carried the American flag into the Los Angeles Coliseum for the Opening Ceremonies of the '84 Summer Games.
COACHING CORNER . . . Palo Alto High is looking for a varsity girls' basketball coach for the 2005-06 season and a varsity baseball coach for the 2006 season. Hoops coach Amy Stock is stepping down after four seasons, the first three which ended in league championships. Her 2003 squad finished 23-7 and reached the CCS semifinals for the first time in school history.
