ON THE DIAMOND . . . The Palo Alto Heat 12-under ASA Junior Olympic "C" All-Star girls' fast pitch softball team will travel to San Diego on July 15-17 to participate in the California State Games Softball Championship Tournament. Palo Alto qualified for the tournament by capturing the Northern California Championship at Twin Creeks in Sunnyvale last weekend. Palo Alto defeated King City (9-7), Morgan Hill (12-4), and Santa Cruz (8-2). Palo Alto's Grace Stafford struck out eight Santa Cruz players in the championship game. Other team members include Lexie DeStefano, Becca Dixon, Maya Fielder, Anna Gale, Natalie Gauthier, Julia Howard, Keely Haverstock, Kristen Lee, Trina Ohms, Nicole Quilliam, Sydney Rock and Margaret Wenzlau . . . The East Palo Alto Junior Giants are about to start up their 11th baseball season and the league is currently recruiting players, ages 5-14, before the league opener on July 9. Signups are being held each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jack Farrell Park. The league features T-Ball (ages 5-7) and teams for players 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17. Interested players and coaches also can register during the week at the East Palo Alto Parks and Recreation Department and the Bell Street Gym. The Junior Giants program, presented by Bank of America, is a non-competitive baseball league run by the Giants Community Fund.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK . . . Palo Alto High graduate David Stringer was named Pitcher of the Week in the Southern Division of the Valley Baseball League while playing for Woodstock. Stringer, who redshirted his freshman year at Stanford in 2004-05, made three relief appearances last week -- going 2-0 with no runs allowed in 7 2/3 innings. Stringer allowed one hit and struck out six in 2 2/3 innings in an 11-9 win over Haymarket on June 21. He then struck out four and surrendered one hit in two innings of a 9-2 win over Staunton on June 23. He closed the week last Saturday with three innings of one-hit ball and two strikeouts in a 4-3 win over Waynesboro. For the week, Stringer was fourth in the VBL in opposing batting average (.120), fourth in strikeouts (12), and tied for first in wins (two). The VBL is an NCAA-sanctioned wooden bat league in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.
ON THE FIELD . . . The MVLA CyberRays, a CYSA Girls U-14 Class 1 team for players born after 7/31/91, are looking for players interested in competing at the highest level. Team members are from Saratoga, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Los Altos Hills.
