ON THE LINKS . . . Stanford men's golf coach Conrad Ray of Palo Alto shot a 10-over-par 80 on Thursday and was tied for 132nd after the opening round of the U.S. Open Golf Championships in Pinehurst, N.C. . . . Palo Alto Muni assistant pro Rich Bin teamed with Mick Soli to win the NCPGA Pro Scotch tournament at Richmond Country Club this week. Bin and Soli shot 126, winning a playoff on the first hole . . . The Accel Foundation Golf Tournament, which will benefit the Palo Alto High athletic community, will be held June 27 at Palo Alto Hills Country Club. Cost for the scramble format is $250 per person or $900 per foursome. Cost includes cart, lunch, prizes and post-golf reception. For more information: Cfeeney@aol.com or 327-5870.


JUNIOR GIANTS . . . The East Palo Alto Junior Giants are about to start up their 11th baseball season and the league is currently recruiting players, ages 5-14, before the league opener on July 9. Signups are being held each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jack Farrell Park. The league features T-Ball (ages 5-7) and teams for players 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17. Interested players and coaches also can register during the week at the East Palo Alto Parks and Recreation Department and the Bell Street Gym. The Junior Giants program, presented by Bank of America, is a non-competitive baseball league run by the Giants Community Fund.


BASEBALL TOURNEY . . . The Alpine/West Menlo Little League will host the first Tournament of Champions of District 52 at Ford Field in Portola Valley. The champions of the Alpine, Menlo-Atherton, San Carlos and Half Moon Bay leagues will play in a single-elimination tourney starting Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (Half Moon Bay vs. Alpine/West Menlo). San Carlos will play Menlo-Atherton at 1:30 p.m. The losers will play Monday and the winners on Tuesday, both at 5:30 p.m. The tournament is a prelude to the District 52 tournament that begins July 2.


ON THE TRACK . . . Stanford grad Toby Stevenson took the U.S. lead in the men's pole vault with a winning clearance of 19-4 1/4 during a meet last weekend in Monterrey, Mexico . . . Stanford grad Lauren Fleshman clocked 4:14.73 and finished third in the women's 1,500 meters on Tuesday at the annual Harry Jerome International Track Classic in Burnaby, B.C., Canada . . . Legendary Stanford coach Payton Jordan lost one of his records for the masters 100 meters when former University of Texas sprint great Bobby Whilden set a world record in the men's 70 division last week at the National Senior Games in Pittsburgh, Pa. Whilden finished the race in 12.76 seconds to shatter Jordan's previous world mark of 12.91.
