AMERICAN LEGION . . . The Redwood City Post 105 Blues defeated Los Altos, 11-1, on Sunday at Menlo School to improve to 5-2 (9-2 overall). Danny Rogers and Andy Suiter combined on a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Michael Paul Stauffer drove in three runs and Nathan Adelman had three hits . . . Palo Alto Post 375 split two games with the San Mateo Orioles, losing 2-1 on Saturday for its first loss of the season, and winning 17-3 on Sunday. Max Pinto had three hits and drove in six runs on Sunday, while Lance Turner and Brock Parsons each had three hits and drove in two runs. Alex Schmarzo was the winning pitcher . . . The Menlo Park Bears swept a Saturday doubleheader from the Redwood City Reds, 6-4 and 9-8. Cody West hit a three-run homer and was also the winning pitcher in the first game. Jon Abramson added two hits. West had four hits and drove in four runs in the second game but it took an Andrew Preimesberger suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the victory.
ON THE COURT . . . Stanford sophomore Candice Wiggins was named one of 12 players for the USA Under-19 World Championship women's basketball team. Wiggins was one of 15 finalists who won the gold medal at the International Sports Invitational over the weekend in San Diego. Team USA beat Russia, 73-57, to win the gold and finish 4-0. Wiggins scored 13 points in an 82-74 win over Australia that secured a spot in the gold medal game. Duke coach Gail Goestenkors will lead the team into the World Championships which begin July 15 in Hammamet and Nabeul, Tunisia.
ONE LAST RACE . . . In her last official all high school race, Gunn High grad Tori Tyler finished 12th in the girls' mile at the Golden West Invitational at Folsom High on Saturday. Tyler, who won the state 3,200 meter title last week in Sacramento, went 5:10.17 in the mile. Erin Bedell of Texas won the race in 4:44.17 while California state champion Annie St. Geme finished third in 4:51.00. St. Geme is the daughter of former Stanford runner Ceci Hopp and former Cardinal football player Ed St. Geme. Tyler, who will be attending Washington in the fall, will run in the U.S. Junior National Championships in Carson, which begins June 23.
COACHING CORNER . . . Palo Alto High is looking for a varsity baseball coach for the 2006 season. OF LOCAL NOTE . . . The Accel Foundation Golf Tournament, which will benefit the Palo Alto High athletic community, will be held June 27 at Palo Alto Hills Country Club.
