Kerry McCoy knows what it takes to win at the highest level, and Stanford hopes he can bring the success he's enjoyed as both a wrestler and coach to The Farm.
McCoy, a two-time Olympian, four-time World Cup Champion and three-time NCAA All-American, was hired as the Cardinal wrestling coach, and will begin his tenure this summer.
"I'm really excited for the opportunity to be a part of Stanford wrestling," McCoy said. "I have always admired the whole Stanford Athletic Department and the standard that the university has set across the country. The opportunity to be a part of that is just awe inspiring."
McCoy spent the last five seasons at Lehigh University, where he helped the Mountain Hawks four EIWA Conference Championships. He coached 14 NCAA All-Americans, and two NCAA champions.
"We are very excited that Kerry McCoy is joining our staff," Stanford Director of Athletics Ted Leland said. "He brings a great deal of experience to Stanford, having succeeded at the highest levels of wrestling."
McCoy has also served on Athlete Advisory committees for USA Wrestling and the U.S. Olympic Committee.
He has also served as an assistant at Penn State for three seasons, during which the Nittany Lions posted two fourth-place finishes at the NCAA Tournament and produced 10 All-Americans and two NCAA Champions.
McCoy, who wrestled at Penn State, owns a 150-18 overall record and won the NCAA heavyweight championship in 1994 and 1997.
He was fifth at the 2000 Olympiad and seventh at the 2004 Games in Athens.
General
Stanford will be getting a new football schedule in addition to a new stadium in 2006 as the Pac-10 Conference adopted a nine-game conference football schedule with the overall college season increasing to 12 regular-season games.
It will be the first time the Pac-10 has a full round-robin schedule in football since 1977.
The conference also voted to expand the men's basketball tournament to include all 10 teams and added a fourth day to the proceedings. The winner of the tournament receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Pac-10 also voted to experiment with instant replay in football during the 2005 season. The conference will adopt a system similar to the one that was successfully implemented by the Big 10. Instant replay will be utilized in all Conference games and in non-conference games hosted by Pac-10 members if agreed to by the visiting institution.
