A retrospective on the life and influence of writer Wallace Stegner will conclude this weekend at the Los Altos History Museum.

McNiel's paintings and drawings are currently on exhibit at Stellar Somerset Gallery in Palo Alto. McNiel will give a lecture about her art on Thursday.
Thursday

Stellar Somerset Gallery
will host a guest lecture with artist Julie McNiel tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. McNiel's paintings and drawings are currently on exhibit in a show entitled "Moving Target." A reception for the artist will take place from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Stellar Somerset Gallery is located at 539 Bryant St. in Palo Alto. The Foothill New Works Festival will be presented tonight at 8 p.m. at Foothill College's Playhouse Theater (Room 1301), 12345 El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills. Presented by the Foothill College Drama Department, the festival will feature eight student-written and student-directed short plays. Additional show times are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 general; $12 students and seniors. "Vanishing Worlds: Art and Ritual in Amazonia" will be on display through Aug. 21 at Stanford's Cantor Arts Center. Organized by the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the exhibition features 150 art objects from the ceremonies and daily life of indigenous peoples of the Amazon River basin. Tours of the exhibition will take place on Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Center is located at Lomita Drive at Museum Way and is open Wednesday - Sunday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Thursday until 8 p.m. Admission is free. "The World Goes 'Round"will run through June 18 at the Bus Barn Theatre, 97 Hillview Ave. in Los Altos. This revue will feature music by John Kander and Fred Ebb, including songs from "Cabaret," "Chicago," "New York New York," "Funny Lady" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman. Wallace Stegner: Throwing a Long Shadow" will run through June 12 at the Los Altos History Museum. The retrospective covers the life and influence of Stegner, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, teacher, environmentalist and Peninsula treasure. Stanford Art Spaces presents a "Philippine Art Exhibit" through June 23. The exhibition features works by 14 Philippine artists. Chinese brush paintings by Professor Hau Pei-Jen
will be on display through July 8 at Mountain View's City Hall (Fourth Floor Gallery), 500 Castro St. (corner of Mercy). An opening reception will take place today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the gallery. Viewing hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Between Waters Gallery and Design will feature the works of Jack Durnford, Rose Offner, Char Pribuss and Beverly Travlos through August. An exhibition of Eastern Light photography will open tonight at Modernbook Gallery, 494 University Ave. in Palo Alto. The exhibit features the works of Indonesian resident Rio Helmi, one of Asia's leading photographers. A reception will be held tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. The exhibit will run through May 5. Stanford University's Documentary Film and Video MA students
will present a collection of eight short documentary films today at 3 p.m. at Cubberley Auditorium. Located in the School of Education, the auditorium is at 485 Lasuen Mall on the Stanford campus. Each thesis film is approximately 15 minutes long. Admission is free. An informal reception will immediately follow the screening. The 43rd Ann Arbor Film Festival will take place tonight from 7 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m. at Foothill College's Appreciation Hall, Room 1500, 12345 El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills.
