CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford junior men's basketball player Chris Hernandez, who declared himself for the June 28 NBA draft, has yet to make up his mind whether to stay in the running or return to school despite reports he was headed back to Stanford. Hernandez told Glenn Reeves of the San Mateo County Times that "if nothing comes up in the next week and a half, I'll write that letter," referring to withdrawing his name from consideration. Hernandez has worked out for the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers recently. He has until June 21 to withdraw but said he would do it a week ahead of time . . . Stanford women's lacrosse players Meghan Burker, Liz Piselli, and Laura Shane will participate in tryouts for the United States Developmental Team at Dianne Geppi-Aikens Field in Baltimore next Saturday and Sunday . . . The Stanford women's sailing team is in third place with a combined score of 69 headed into today's finals of the ICSA Nationals on Lake Travis in Austin, Tex.
NOTEWORTHY . . . Palo Alto High senior Justin Shoolery was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the MassMutal Foundation, which he will apply toward his education at Whitman College in Washington in the fall. The scholarship was presented in association with the USTA. Shoolery has played No. 1 singles for the Vikings the past two years. Paly finished third in the SCVAL De Anza Division the past two years and reached the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Division I tournament this year. The Vikings finished 16-4 this year, their best school mark in eight years. Schoolery, ranked in the top 50 among Northern California 18-under players by the USTA, was presented the award on Thursday night as part of Senior Night at Paly.
COACHING CORNER . . . Menlo School is looking for a girls' varsity volleyball coach. ON THE FARM . . . Stanford is hosting a Youth Sports Festival and Seminar on Saturday, June 25 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 pm. The event features sports clinics hosted by Stanford University student-athletes and coaches for children ages 8-14, two seminars on the impact of sports participation, a panel discussion with former Stanford student-athletes and numerous interactive exhibits in a festival atmosphere. All events are free and open to the public. The first 1,000 children to register will receive a free Youth Festival t-shirt. For further information, call (650) 724-3910.
