Book Talk
(June 01, 2005)
A LIFE OF PEACE . . . Robert McAfee Brown was part of the Palo Alto area peace movement from the 1960s until he died in 2001. Now, a posthumous memoir, "Reflections Over the Long Haul," has been published, with a forward by the Rev. William Sloane Coffin, former chaplain at Yale University. Brown was a pacifist during World War II, serving in the Navy as a chaplain. His funeral service was three hours long, "and, after the closing benediction, no one wanted to leave," Coffin writes.
OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Local entrepreneur Wayne McVicker has written "Starting Something," a book about his self-described "five-year personal and corporate roller-coaster ride" with a Silicon Valley start-up company. A trio of co-authors -- Helena Chumura Kraemer of Stanford University, Karen Kraemer Lowe and David J. Kupfer have written "To Your Health: How to Understand What Research Tells Us About Risk." And Alvin H. Sacks of Los Altos Hills has written "The Joy of Inventing."
AUTHOR, AUTHOR . . . Author events at Kepler's Books in Menlo Park this month include noted travel writer Paul Theroux ("Blinding Light") at 7:30 p.m. June 15. Novelist Nick Hornby ("A Long Way Down") appears at 7:30 p.m. June 21. And local mystery writer Barry Eisler ("Killing Rain") appears at 7:30 p.m. June 23.
