BE THE CHANGE ... Acterra: Action for a Sustainable Earth is launching a new environmental leadership program that will offer lectures, workshops, student projects, panel discussions and field trips. Entitled Be the Change , the program's goal is to create positive environmental change were the candidates live and work. "We wanted to create a program for people who care about the environment, and want to express that concern with concrete actions beyond simple things like recycling," said Program Director Kay O'Neill. The program will focus on six key areas: visionary leadership, environmental information, skill building, networking, practice and personal mastery. Michael Closson, Acterra's executive director, said, "We see a program that involves diverse participants -- from business leaders to trade union members to scientists to social activists. We plan to create powerful stewards of the earth, leaders who will green their career and their life from the inside out." The first class will consist of 25 to 30 individuals. Applications can be found at www.acterra.org/leadership and are due June 15. Interviews will be held during the last two weeks in June.
PUSH FOR DIVESTMENT ... Students involved in Stanford STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur) are working to urge the university to divest from companies complicit in the reported genocide in Darfur. The effort, which began in April, is focusing on four corporations in particular: PetroChina, AAB, Sinopec, and Tatneft. Each is involved in the purchase of oil from the Sudanese government, which STAND says engages in a campaign that has killed, enslaved, or displaced more than 2 million Darfurians. The divestment movement has already collected 1,925 student signatures in a petition, and has met with university leadership.
