ON THE SOCCER FIELD . . . Three Palo Alto residents and a Menlo Park resident from the Union Football Club girls' under-14 Division I team were selected to participate in the District II Olympic Development program. Jessie Duller was picked for the 16-under group while Sammi Bengston, Sydney Lundgren and Maddie Payne were chosen for the 15-under group. A fifth member of the team will be with the under-14 group. Duller, Bengston and Lundgren will be freshmen at Palo Alto High in the fall while Payne will be attending St. Francis . . . The Stanford Blaze CYSA girls team will be hosting tryouts for their fall and spring season on Thursday, May 12 between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. at JLS field No. 2, and on Sunday, May 15 between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Greer field No. 4. SWIM CHAMP . . . Palo Alto's Daniela Barnea had herself a big weekend at the Pacific Masters Championships at the Dolores Bengston Aquatic Center in Pleasanton. Barnea won all seven of her swimming events in the women's 60-64 age bracket - 50 fly, 100 fly, 200 fly, 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 breast and 100 IM - I the short-course meet, but she won high-point honors, as well. To top it off, Barnea was named 2004 Female Swimmer of the Year. More than 800 age-group swimmers competed in the meet, second only to the national championships in terms of competitors.
CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford currently holds a slim 18.75-point lead over Michigan in the race for the Sports Academy Director's Cup following the winter sports season. Stanford, which has won the award the past 10 years, has 875 points to Michigan's 856.25. North Carolina (655), Wisconsin (626.75) and Texas (618.25) round out the top five. Stanford picked up points in 10 of the 15 eligible sports, including men's basketball, women's basketball, fencing, women's gymnastics, men's gymnastics, women's swimming, men's swimming, women's indoor track and field, men's indoor track and field and wrestling. Michigan picked up points in eight sports, including men's ice hockey. Other Pac-10 teams among the top 100 include UCLA (10th), Arizona State (12th), Arizona (18th), USC (19th), Washington (20th), California (29th), and Oregon (74th) . . . Former Stanford standout Marissa Irvin won her first round match at the WRAL-TV 5 Women's Tennis Classic USTA Challenger in Raleigh, N.C. on Wednesday. The top-seeded Irvin defeated Neha Uberoi, 6-1, 6-3. Second-seeded Laura Granville, a two-time NCAA singles champion out of Stanford, was upset in the first round by Canadian Stephanie DuBois, 7-5, 6-3. Stanford product Anne Kremer lost in the second round of the Rabat Grand Prix in Morocco . . . Stanford grad Paul Goldstein advanced to the quarterfinals of the Harrah's Entertainment Challenger in Tunica, Mississippi with a 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-0 victory over qualifier Travis Rettenmaier on Wednesday. He was scheduled to meet James Blake on Thursday . . . Stanford grad Scott Lipsky is seeded fourth in this week's SAAB Grand Harbor of Vero Beach USTA Challenger . . . Stanford is hosting a Youth Sports Festival and Seminar on Saturday, June 25 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 pm. The event features sports clinics hosted by Stanford University student-athletes and coaches for children ages 8-14, two seminars on the impact of sports participation, a panel discussion with former Stanford student-athletes and numerous interactive exhibits in a festival atmosphere. TAEKWONDO NEWS . . . Stanford Taekwondo is hosting a tournament on Saturday, May 28 in Maples Pavilion on the Stanford campus for adults and children of all ages and levels. Competition begins at 9 a.m. with a Poomse (forms) competition, followed by sparring in the afternoon. Electronic scoring systems will be available in every ring. Registration for competitors is $50 by mail and $40 if done online. Admission is $5, or $3 with a student ID card and for kids under 18. Stanford students will be admitted free.
