OAKS' CORNER . . . Menlo College is represented by two women's wrestlers at the U.S. National Championships in Las Vegas this weekend. Freshman Laurin Daniels, ranked eighth in the 130-pound division, begins competition today at 9 a.m. The finals for her event are scheduled for 7 p.m. today. Sophomore Sara Fulp-Allen, ranked second at 105 pounds, wrestles on Saturday at 9 a.m., with the finals scheduled for 7 p.m. Fulp-Allen finished fourth in last year's championship. Stanford grad Patricia Miranda is the defending national champion in the division, but will not be competing this year due to her commitments at the Yale Law School . . . Menlo College senior softball player Amanda Colon was honored with the Collis Steele Award, given to the athlete with the highest GPA. In addition to her academic success, Colon was a success on the field as she led the Oaks with a .427 average (50-for-117), 11 home run and 30 RBI while starting all 37 games. Senior football player Jake Oliver earned the Don W. Bear Award for all-around leadership while senior Cindy Epps won the F. Philler Curtis Award for outstanding contribution to campus life. Kyle Cantrell and Jessica Courson received the Glen E. Dorst Award for their contribution to youth in athletics. Jimmy Goethals was honored as Male Athlete of the Year. The senior catcher hit .325 and led Menlo with 10 home runs and 44 RBI. Colon and Maria Gomez shared Female Athlete of the Year honors . . .The Menlo College baseball team lost four games, including an 11-inning 5-4 loss to Willamette, at the Chapman Invitational over the weekend to finish its season at 21-16. Gabe Duran was named to the all-tournament team after collecting four hits, including his eighth home run of the season, and three RBI . . . The Menlo College softball team dropped a pair of doubleheaders and ended its season on an eight-game losing streak to finish 15-22.


OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Palo Alto's Abby Duckett, 10, who swims for Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics (PASA), broke a five-year old Pacific Swimming record by winning the 400-meter freestyle (long course) in 5:01.73 last weekend during an age-group meet at Saratoga High. That erased the previous mark of 5:07.33 set in 2000. Duckett currently ranks No. 5 in the U.S. (in her age group) in the 500-yard free, No. 8 nationally in the 200-yard free, No. 9 nationally in the 200 IM and No. 11 in the country in the 100-yard butterfly . . . Palo Alto High grad Durell Williams, a sophomore, had three hits -- including a double and two RBI -- to lead College of San Mateo to a 6-2 baseball win over Canada on Tuesday. The win clinched the Coast Conference North title for the Bulldogs -- CSM's fourth straight conference crown, and second for Williams . . . Dieter Walz of Portola Valley established American records for the 70-74 age-group for the 50K and 100K runs on April 16 in San Francisco. The races were the Ruth Anderson Ultras, held annually at Lake Merced for 20 years, under the auspices of Bay Area Ultra Runners and the Pacific Association of USATF.


COACHING CORNER . . . Menlo-Atherton is looking for coaches for the 2005-06 school year: wrestling, girls' frosh-soph volleyball, track and field assistant, varsity football assistant and cheerleading. CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford is hosting a Youth Sports Festival and Seminar on Saturday, June 25 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 pm. The event features sports clinics hosted by Stanford University student-athletes and coaches for children ages 8-14, two seminars on the impact of sports participation, a panel discussion with former Stanford student-athletes and numerous interactive exhibits in a festival atmosphere. All events are free and open to the public. The first 1,000 children to register will receive a free Youth Festival t-shirt. For further information, call (650) 724-3910.
