CARDINAL FOOTBALL . . . If the spring football game at Stanford on Saturday was any indication, the Cardinal appear to be in good shape at quarterback. Redshirt junior Trent Edwards completed 15 of 17 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns, and redshirt sophomore T.C. Ostrander , a Menlo-Atherton High grad, was 13 of 19 for 174 yards and two touchdowns. took most of the snaps. "Both Trent and T.C. are very skilled players, and it showed," Stanford coach Walt Harris said. "They both have a lot of work to do, but I'm enthused and excited by their play. They're both good football players and they need to become great executors of our offense. Both of them are young and have talent, but have a great deal to learn. They need to continue to work hard throughout the summer and continue to develop." The Cardinal offense scored 11 touchdowns, with junior receiver Mark Bradford leading the way with two TD receptions. He caught eight passes for 136 yards. Fifth-year senior Gerren Crochet caught a TD pass and scored another on a 62-yard run. Evan Moore, Marcus McCutcheon, Justin McCullum, J.R. Lemon, David Marrero, Anthony Kimble and Nick Frank also scored. Harris awarded four players - Crochet, Frank, Casey Carroll, and Michael Okwo Most Improved honors while Brandon Willetts was named Unsung Player honoree.


NFL DRAFT . . . Stanford safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, tight end Alex Smith and cornerback Stanley Wilson were all selected in the third round of the NFL draft on Saturday; the first time since 1993 that the Cardinal had three players taken in the first three rounds of the draft. Atogwe was the second pick of the third round, the 66th player chosen overall by the St. Louis Rams. Smith went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the seventh pick of the third round and 71st overall. Wilson was the eighth pick of the third round and 72nd overall to the Detroit Lions. On Sunday, linebacker Jared Newberry was taken in the sixth round by the Washington Redskins; defensive end Will Svitek went to the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round and linebacker David Bergeron was taken by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round.


OAKS' CORNER . . . Menlo College senior softball player Amanda Colon was honored with the Collis Steele Award, given to the athlete with the highest GPA. In addition to her academic success, Colon was a success on the field as she led the Oaks with a .427 average (50-for-117), 11 home run and 30 RBI while starting all 37 games. Senior football player Jake Oliver earned the Don W. Bear Award for all-around leadership while senior Cindy Epps won the F. Philler Curtis Award for outstanding contribution to campus life. Kyle Cantrell and Jessica Courson received the Glen E. Dorst Award for their contribution to youth in athletics. Jimmy Goethals was honored as Male Athlete of the Year. The senior catcher hit .325 and led Menlo with 10 home runs and 44 RBI. Colon and Maria Gomez shared Female Athlete of the Year honors . . .The Menlo College baseball team lost four games, including an 11-inning 5-4 loss to Willamette, at the Chapman Invitational over the weekend to finish its season at 21-16. Gabe Duran was named to the all-tournament team after collecting four hits, including his eighth home run of the season, and three RBI . . . The Menlo College softball team dropped a pair of doubleheaders and ended its season on an eight-game losing streak to finish 15-22. The Oaks dropped two games to host Notre Dame de Namur, 6-4 and 4-3, despite Colon collecting six hits and driving in four runs combined. The Oaks lost, 13-2 and 4-3, to host Cal State Hayward on Sunday.


COACHING CORNER . . . Menlo-Atherton is looking for coaches for the 2005-06 school year: wrestling, girls' frosh-soph volleyball, track and field assistant, varsity football assistant and cheerleading. CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford is hosting a Youth Sports Festival and Seminar on Saturday, June 25 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 pm. The event features sports clinics hosted by Stanford University student-athletes and coaches for children ages 8-14, two seminars on the impact of sports participation, a panel discussion with former Stanford student-athletes and numerous interactive exhibits in a festival atmosphere.
