AROUND THE BLOCK AROUND THE BLOCK (April 27, 2005)

OOPS, WRONG HOUSE . . . Barron Park resident Bob Moss got a scare last Saturday, when he awoke to find a tall, young white man, dressed in a dark suit and dress shirt, walking in his home. Moss confronted him, asking the stranger why he was there and who he was. The young man mumbled something about having to look for something, turned around and went out into the backyard. Moss called the police, who searched the neighborhood and did not find the intruder. Later that morning, Moss and his wife, Harriet, considered a possibility: The man could have attended the Gunn High School prom the night before and, hung over or "on something," wandered into the home by accident. Moss recalled a door had briefly been left unlocked, and said of the experience: "It's unsettling to confront some stranger unexpectedly in your home, even if he's non-threatening and non-confrontational." Thankful for the police officers' quick response, he also told a cop, "When I attend the budget meetings this spring, I'll speak up for not cutting the police budget."

NEW PREZ . . . The Greenmeadow Community Association has a new president. Ray Narragon has taken over the two-year position vacated by Lanie Wheeler. This is his third year on the board of directors. Narragon has lived in Greenmeadow since 2001 with his wife and three sons and works in information technology. His main interest as president is to ensure members' comfort at the nearby park and pool, he said, and to engage more of the community in the association. "What really makes the community work are the committees," he said. Issues facing the neighborhood include traffic and other impacts of developments, such as the Campus for Jewish Life, along Charleston Road. For the July quarterly meeting, a talk by the fire department -- complete with rides on a fire truck for children -- is planned. In addition to the annual July 4th celebration, Greenmeadow will have a theme party for adults. "This year, everyone is lobbying for a disco theme," Narragon said.

UP A CREEK . . . Now that the renovations to the Matadero Creek are done, the Midtown Residents' Association will sponsor a "show and tell" walking tour of the improvements. The event will be led by staff of the Santa Clara Valley Water District on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. The public should meet at the Municipal Service Center, at 3201 East Bayshore Road. Refreshments will be served.
