Health Notes Health Notes (April 13, 2005)

DONATE LIFE ... That pink dot you have affixed to the back of your driver's license indicating you are an organ donor may be passé. There's a new way to indicate your organ donation wishes -- an online registry. The Donate Life California Registry is a confidential online database for Californians to clearly state their commitments to donate organs and tissue. To register online, go to http://www.donateLIFEcalifornia.org.

A CELEBRATION AND REMEMBRANCE ... The Community Breast Health Project is holding its second annual Honoring Life: A Celebration and Remembrance on May 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lucie Stern Community Center. The community gathering is a time to remember those lost to breast cancer and celebrate those who overcome it and their caretakers. Speakers at the event include Urban Cummings , a husband involved in his wife's breast cancer treatment and recovery; Helene Harris , a young woman who will share her perspective on her journey; and the Rev. Jennifer Block from the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco, who will share her thoughts on compassionately caring for others. There will be a harpist, a candle-lighting ceremony and guests will be invited to write memories and names of loved ones on leaves to adorn a commemoration tree.

NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ... Peninsula Interfaith Action is sounding a loud rally cry for health care for all children. The organization is joining a statewide effort to get the state's 800,000 uninsured children health coverage. Today at 1 p.m. a busload of PIA members will travel to Sacramento from East Palo Alto for a statewide Town Hall meeting. Assemblyman Ira Ruskin and Sen. Joe Simitian will be at the town hall meeting. Legislation introduced by Assembly Health Committee Chair Wilma Chan would provide health insurance for every child in California from 0 to 21 years of age, regardless of immigration status.
