BUSY LACROSSE WEEKEND . . . The Stanford Women's Lacrosse program will host the 2005 Sports her Way Western States Lacrosse Tournament for the fourth year in a row. It's the largest lacrosse event west of the Mississippi and features nearly 1,000 players. Tournament games begin Saturday and conclude Sunday. The Stanford women first will battle visiting Cal tonight at 7:30 p.m., kicking off the big lacrosse weekend. The tournament features 53 teams, including high schools from Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Ohio and Colorado. Collegiate and post-collegiate teams will compete in the open club division. Menlo-Atherton High will play three times Saturday, facing Rancho Bernardo at 8 a.m., taking on Bella Vista at 11:40 a.m. and La Jolla at 2:25 p.m. The high school title match is Saturday at 5:10 p.m.


CARDINAL CORNER . . . Former Stanford keeper Robbie Fulton has signed a developmental contract for the 2005 with the San Jose Earthquakes. Fulton was selected by the Quakes in MLS Supplemental Draft on Feb. 4. Fulton, 22, left his mark on the Stanford record books by setting the all-time record for lowest goals-against average in a season ((0.43 in 2002) and accumulating one of the best goals-against averages (0.89) in Stanford history while serving as a captain in 2004 . . . The defending national champion Stanford women's volleyball team opens its spring schedule on April 9 against San Francisco. The Cardinal host the Stanford Spring Fling at Maples, April 30 . . . The Stanford crew program will again host the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic, an invitational rowing regatta held at Redwood Shores on Saturday, April 9 from 9am to 5:30 pm, and Sunday, April 10 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 pm. The regatta features crew races between 17 of the nation's top universities as well as nearly 400 Bay Area community and high school rowers.


GYMNASTICS CHAMP . . . Palo Alto resident Avery Herron, 10, flipped to four gold medals in the 10-B year-old age group at the Level 7 Nor Cal State championship held March 20 in Visalia. By winning the all-around title with a career-best score of 37.425, Herron became the state champion in her age group during her first level 7 season. Herron led her age group throughout the state competition en route to gold medals in vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and the all-around. She helped her club team finish in a first-place tie.


OAKS' CORNER . . . Menlo College women wrestler Sara Fulp-Allen was named Outstanding Lightweight wrestler at the College Nationals on Saturday at Menlo. Fulp-Allen won the 105-pound title while the Oaks finished fourth as a team with 23 points.
