HOOP ALL-AMERICAN Stanford freshman guard Candice Wiggins was named to the Associated Press All-America second team Wednesday. Wiggins was the only freshmen selected to the three teams chosen by the 45 weekly voters in the national top-25 poll. Wiggins received nine first-place votes. LSU guard Seimone Augustus, Kansas State forward Kendra Wecker, Duke guard Monique Currie, Ohio State center Jessica Davenport and TCU forward Sandora Irvin comprise the first team. Wiggins earlier was named Co-Freshman of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) in addition to being named Pac-10 Player of the Year and conference Freshman of the Year.


BOOK SIGNING . . . In conjunction with the 2005 Stanford Track and Field Invitational this weekend, all alumni and friends of Stanford University are invited to join Payton Jordan at Cobb Track and Angell Field on Saturday as the former Stanford and Olympic coach signs copies of the recent book, "Champions for Life." Jack Scott and Jim Ward, co-authors and former Stanford track and field teammates, also will be present. Coach Jordan is scheduled to sign books from 1-2:30 p.m. at Templeton Plaza, located at the west side of Cobb Track and Angell Field. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the Stanford Track House throughout the day. The annual Payton Jordan U.S. Track and Field Open will return to Stanford on Monday, May 30. The nationally televised IAAF Grand Prix II meet is among the top track meets in the world. The event attracts the Olympic-caliber athletes. In last year's meet, Stanford graduate Toby Stevenson won the pole vault, launching him toward an eventual silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. The meet also featured former 100-meter world recordholder Maurice Greene, who ran the fastest time in the world (under any conditions). Tickets are available by calling 1-800-STANFORD. CARDINAL CORNER . . . The defending national champion Stanford women's volleyball team opens its spring schedule on April 9 against San Francisco. The Cardinal host the Stanford Spring Fling at Maples, April 30 . . . The Stanford crew program will again host the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic, an invitational rowing regatta held at Redwood Shores on Saturday, April 9 from 9am to 5:30 pm, and Sunday, April 10 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 pm. The regatta features crew races between 17 of the nation's top universities as well as nearly 400 Bay Area community and high school rowers.
