STANFORD ROUNDUP

Gilmore's pitching Gilmore's pitching (March 23, 2005)a relief for Cardinal

His seven innings of important relief pitching helps Stanford rally for a 9-6 baseball victory over Pacific

by Rick Eymer

With pitching ace Mark Romanczuk struggling, Stanford turned to No. 2 starter Jeff Gilmore to get things right. Gilmore had his share of struggles but managed seven innings of relief to help give the Cardinal a 9-6 come-from-behind victory over host Pacific in a nonconference baseball game Sunday in Stockton.

Stanford won for just the second time on the road in seven games.

Gilmore would have been the normal starter on Sunday had Saturday's game at Stanford not been rained out.

"It was an uphill battle every single pitch for me," Gilmore said. "It took a lot of things from all of our guys to get this victory."

Gilmore overcame six hit batters and did not allow a run over his final six innings as Stanford (12-7) rallied behind Jed Lowrie, who hit his team-leading eighth homer, a three-run shot, which highlighted a four-run fourth that put the Cardinal ahead to stay.

"We were able to do enough to win and that's important," Stanford coach Mark Marquess said. "We got some great pitching from Jeff Gilmore after a tough start and came up with a big inning when we needed one. I'm proud of our guys for the character they showed."

Jim Rapoport matched his career-high with three hits while John Mayberry, Jr. had two hits and drove in two runs, and John Hester added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Mayberry, Jr. recorded his fifth consecutive multiple-hit game, and has a team-high 11. He leads the team with a .360 batting average

"It was really rewarding to get this win," Lowrie said. "Our offense showed some character in the way it came back."

Pacific had had the tying run at the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth before Gilmore retired the final two hitters.

"The best teams are those that can score a lot of runs if the pitching is shaky or can shut down an opponent when you aren't hitting, and we did both things at times," Gilmore said. "That's what good teams do; they pick each other up."

Stanford was scheduled to meet host San Jose State on Tuesday night.
