KLEINBERG'S NEW POST ... Judy Kleinberg vice-mayor of Palo Alto and the executive director of the American Electronics Association has been appointed vice president of programs and policy for Joint Venture. Kleinberg's principal responsibility will be to direct the Technology Convergence Consortium, a Joint Venture initiative bringing together the region's universities, national laboratories, industry associations, and private sector companies. The group's aim is to accelerate the convergence of biotechnology, nanotechnology and conventional information technologies, capturing the economic benefits of this convergence for the Silicon Valley region.
FREE WI-FI ... Grab a latte and get ready to surf. AnchorFree Wireless , a Sunnyvale based Internet provider, recently announced its decision to provide free wireless access on University Avenue. According to a report in the Stanford Daily, the free access will be available on the section of University between Middlefield Road and High Street. Previously, the company charged $5 per month for the service.
STEMCELLS INC. ... Dr. Alan Jacobs recently accepted a position at StemCells, Inc, a development stage biotechnology company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of stem cell-based therapies to treat diseases of the nervous system, liver and pancreas. Formerly the senior director of clinical development at Titan Pharmaceuticals, Jacobs is experienced in managing the clinical trial development of cell-based therapies for conditions such as Parkinson's Disease and stroke.
