OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo College baseball team won the Cal Classic title at Claremont on Sunday with a 9-2 win over Rutgers-Newark and a 12-4 win over host Claremont. The Oaks (15-4-1) outscored their opponents 48-7 over the four-game weekend tournament, giving them the title. Kevin Boucher (4-0) went seven innings, striking out nine and walking one in earning the first game victory. Sean Scott collected three hits. Against Claremont, Scott added three hits and drove in three runs. Garrett Rogers had two hits and drove in two runs. Palo Alto High grad Colby Henard (2-3) earned the win, going 5 2/3 innings . . . The Menlo College softball team won three of four games over the weekend at the Sun West Softball Tournament at Chapman. The Oaks (9-9) hit seven home runs in their four games, led by senior Amanda Colón, who hit three. Meagan Giffin pitched a five-hitter in a 2-0 win over Illinois College on Sunday.
ON TRACK INDOORS . . . Menlo School senior Libby Jenke concluded a fine indoor track and field season with a third-place finish in the girls' 800 meters at the National Scholastic Indoor Championship (NSIC) meet in New York City. Jenke clocked 2:07.88. She was boxed in early, but broke out and led laps through the second, third and fourth laps until being passed in the finals 80 meters. Jenke received All-American honors in the Indoor 800, as well NSIC Academic All-American honors.
OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Ten members of the Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics (PASA) Swim Club will leave Sunday for the Junior National Swimming Championships, set for March 22-26 in Orlando, Fla. The traveling squad includes Casey Barnes-Waychus, Monika Friedman, Maryann Hiller, Haley Read, Liv Jensen, Courtney Beyer, Alex Navarro, Kameron Flores-Maxfield, Austin Stanley and Joe Plume. They'll be accompanied by PASA coaches Scott Shea, Tony Batis and Ben Chung The 22nd annual Fifty-Plus Lifelong Fitness Weekend came to a conclusion Sunday as the featured event, the Paul Spangler Memorial 8-Kilometer Run, drew some of the top senior distance runners in the nation to Stanford University. Dennis Kurtis, 51, of San Jose won the men's race in 29 minutes flat. Shirley Matson of Larkspur topped the women in 34:24, bettering the current U.S. single-age record for 64-year-old women. The unique race, held annually at Stanford University, is dedicated to runners ages 50 years and older. Isobel Fox of Menlo Park was second in the women's race in 36:09. In the men's race that also finished in Stanford Stadium, Chris Berka, 50, of Portola Valley was second 30:23. In the separate 8K race for runners under age 50, Gunn High senior Tori Tyler, 17, topped the women in 29:46.
CARDINAL CORNER . . . The Stanford crew program announced it will again host the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic, an invitational rowing regatta held at Redwood Shores on Saturday, April 9 from 9am to 5:30pm, and Sunday, April 10 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 pm. The regatta features crew races between 17 of the nation's top universities as well as nearly 400 Bay Area community and high school rowers.
