STUDENT WINS FOR WORLDLY ART . . .There are only two days left to see Gunn High School junior Hyun-Jin Yoo's award-winning drawing, entitled "Roadmap Around the Universe," displayed in the lobby of the Palo Alto City Hall, 250 Hamilton Ave. Yoo, who won $300, is one of 10 winners in the Sister Cities International 2005 competition for young artists. The contest, on the theme "coming together to build a better world," was open to students 13 to 18 in sister cities worldwide. It drew paintings, collages and drawings from 19 countries. Palo Alto is a sister city to cities in various countries, including Mexico, Sweden and France, as well as the Philipines and the Netherlands.
KEHILLAH BREAKS GROUND . . .Earlier this month, Kehillah Jewish High School held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction at its new Palo Alto site, 3900 Fabian Way. After its lease is up at San Jose's Blackford High School in June, the plan is to relocate and open Kehillah at the Palo Alto site in July. The new location was chosen because of its proximity to the center of the school's service area, drawing students from Burlingame, San Jose and Fremont. Kehillah, which was founded three years ago, is the only ninth- through 12th-grade institution in the area to provide a combination of college preparation and Judaic studies curricula. The new 50,000-square-foot site will provide classrooms, gathering places, offices and a lab, and is expected to serve 350 students. The school is currently accepting applications for the 2005-'06 academic year. For more information, call Amy Schiff, director of admissions, at 408-984-3600 or visit www.kehillah.org.
PAINTING WITH A PURPOSE . . . The "Spruce Up Duveneck" team is looking for additional volunteers to help repaint the United States Map on the Alester Avenue school's blacktop. Painting is scheduled for April 9 and 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are asked to mark their calendars and help get the job done. E-mail LeeAnn Kincade at la2daboo@msn.com, or call the school at 322-5946, with times you can help or questions.
BRING ON THE SHADE . . . Ohlone Elementary School will kick off a week's worth of tree planting March 20. Students, teachers and parents will plant 30 trees around the school's playing areas to provide shade, color and beauty to the stark playground. The school recently received a Leaf-It-to-Us shade-tree grant from the state Department of Forestry and will receive more than $2,400 over the next two years to pay for the landscaping. To maximize shade, the Ohlone Farm Council has decided to plant a variety of trees, including Redwood, Valley Oak, Black Walnut, Chinese Pistache, Tulip Tree, Gingko and Red Maple. The kids involved will also create waterproof posters to surround each new tree that is planted. For more information on the Shade for Ohlone project, e-mail Jennifer Kane at jenniferkane@pacbell.net.
