OAKS' CORNER . . . Menlo College senior women's basketball player Maria Gomez was named the Cal Pac Player of the Week on Tuesday for her efforts in leading the Oaks to the championship game of the Cal Pac tournament last week. She combined for 44 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists . . . Menlo College junior James Gilkey was named to the first team all-Cal Pac Conference men's basketball team and Jay Eitel was named Freshman of the Year . . . The Menlo College softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Bethany on Wednesday. Junior pitcher Lacey Walker threw a one-hitter in the Oaks' 5-0 first game victory. Walker struck out nine and did not walk a batter. She allowed just one base runner, facing 22 batters, one over the minimum. Walker has not allowed a run over her past 16 innings, and has thrown three shutouts in her past five appearances, four starts. Since disastrous outings against LaVerne and Sonoma State, Walker has been nearly unhittable, giving up one run on eight hits over 26 innings (0.27) to lower her season ERA to 2.79. She has not allowed a run in five of her eight appearances and has 43 strikeouts in 37 2-3 innings. Junior shortstop Adrianne Antoni drove in two runs during a four-run rally in the fifth to support Walker, who also had two hits herself. Freshman Valerie De Los Santos added two hits. Menlo dropped the second game, 3-1. The Oaks (6-8) travel to Orange to participate in the Sun West Tournament beginning Saturday, March 12 . . . The Menlo College baseball team won three of four games from Pacific University over the weekend, winning 15-2 on Friday, splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, losing the first game 12-7 and winning the second game 12-5, and winning 9-7 on Sunday. Jim Goethals hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs in Saturday's doubleheader. Goethals also hit a grand slam during Friday's win and Gabe Duran also hit a home run. Matt Gagliardi and Garrett Rogers each drove in three runs. The Oaks (10-3) play Lewis and Clark College in Portland in a three-game series beginning Friday . . . The Menlo College men's golf team finished third in the Cal State Maritime tournament at Blue Rock Springs golf course in Vallejo. Anthony Maestrini led the Oaks with a round of 74. Cameron Lawrence shot a 75.

CHEER CHAMPS . . . The Palo Alto High cheerleaders and dancers competed at the JAMZ National Championship in Las Vegas over the weekend. The varsity dance team placed first, the varsity cheerleaders placed second, and the JV dance team placed second within their divisions. Their last competition is at Cheer Around The Bay in South San Francisco on Sunday, March 13.

CARDINAL CORNER . . . Former Stanford women's tennis star Laura Granville won her second tournament on the USTA pro circuit in as many weeks when she defeated Japan's Akiko Morigami, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-2, in the finals of the American Family Mortgage 50K on Sunday in St. Paul, Minn. . . . The Stanford crew program announced it will again host the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic, an invitational rowing regatta held at Redwood Shores on Saturday, April 9 from 9am to 5:30pm, and Sunday, April 10 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 pm. The regatta features crew races between 17 of the nation's top universities as well as nearly 400 Bay Area community and high school rowers.
