OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team opened the Cal Pac Conference tournament with a 79-67 victory over Holy Names on Wednesday at Cal State East Bay. James Gilkey led the Oaks (13-13) with 18 points as five players reached double figures. Brandon Rogers had 16 points, Kyle Arneson finished with 12 points, Byron Wesley added 11 and Zack Peck scored 10 as the Oaks shot 60 percent (29-of-48). "This was an exceptional performance by a number of guys," Menlo coach Kevin Nosek said. "Both young guys and veterans hit some big shots and made some key stops when we needed them. We did a great job of moving the ball, spreading the ball around, and attacking the basket." Menlo plays Dominican today at 7 p.m. in the semifinals . . . The Menlo College women's basketball team was scheduled to open in the conference tournament on Thursday against Bethany. The Oaks (18-7) were seeded third.
CARDINAL CORNER . . . Former Stanford All-American Josh Childress and former Stanford coach Mike Montgomery shared the same court on Wednesday night for the first time since last year's loss in the NCAA tournament. Childress, a rookie with the Atlanta Hawks, grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds and scored 17 points but it wasn't enough as Atlanta lost to Montgomery's Golden State Warriors, 101-96. "It's been tough. Any time you go from winning to losing, it's tough," Childress said. "I just try to play hard. I talked to coach a little bit before the game and a little bit after. I don't know what else we can say to each other, other than its tough. There's no sugar coating it." Montgomery said it has been a pleasure to watch Childress develop his NBA game. "I'm really proud of Josh and the job he's done," Montgomery said. "He's doing great. He's a monster on the board." Warriors forward Troy Murphy, one of the top rebounders in the NBA, added about Childress: "He's a good rebounder for his size." . . . Stanford product Lillia Osterloh won her second-round match at the WTA Abierto Mexicano Telcel women's tennis event in Acapulco on Wednesday, upsetting No. 7 seed Marta Domachowska, 7-5, 6-4 . . . Former Stanford star Laura Granville won her first-round match at the ITA American Heritage Mortgage event in St. Paul, MN on Tuesday, beating Korea's Mi-Ra Jeon, 6-0, 6-0. She was scheduled to meet Seda Noorlander in the second round on Thursday. Stanford grad Teryn Ashley lost her first-round match, 6-4, 7-5, to Saori Obata . . . The Stanford crew program announced it will again host the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic, an invitational rowing regatta held at Redwood Shores on Saturday, April 9 from 9am to 5:30pm, and Sunday, April 10 from 9am to 4:30 pm. The regatta features crew races between 17 of the nation's top universities as well as nearly 400 Bay Area community and high school rowers.
