Worth a Look Worth a Look (February 18, 2005)

THEATER
Sweeney Todd
"Sweeney Todd" will preview tonight at 8 p.m. at Foothill College's Playhouse, 12345 El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills. "Sweeney Todd" is Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's dark comedy about murderous barber-ism and culinary crime. The production will open on Saturday and run through March 13. Show times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; also Saturday, March 12 at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

MUSIC
Peninsula Pops
Peninsula Pops will perform on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Spangenberg Theatre, 780 Arastradero Road in Palo Alto. The concert will feature the best music from the Big Band era. Special guest Dick Mathias will perform on the saxophone. There will also be a vintage dress contest; audience-members are encouraged to dress in '30s and '40s styles.

Stanford Art Spaces
Stanford Art Spaces presents construction/paintings and mixed-media collage by Gerald Huth, photographic art by Dennis Kohn and ethnographic photography by Dennis Lau through April 14. The Center for Integrated Systems Art Spaces is located on the Stanford University campus. Admission is free. THEATER
No Exit
"No Exit" will open tonight at the Pear Avenue Theatre, 1220 Pear Ave., Unit K in Mountain View. Jean-Paul Sartre's one-act play explores philosophical concepts of existence and relationships. The play is presented by Dragon Productions and will run through March 6.

Show times are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 adults; $15 students and seniors for tonight's opening-night gala; $15 general admission; $10 students and seniors. MUSIC
The pride of Afghanistan
Ustad Farida Mahwash, considered Afghanistan's most famous singer, will perform on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Stanford's Dinkelspiel Auditorium. Joining Mahwash will be masters of traditional Afghan instruments: Aziz Herawi on rubab and sitar; Khalil Ragheb on harmonium and vocals; Ahsan Ahmadi on tabla; and Henri Tournier on flute. The concert will be presented by Stanford Lively Arts.

A free pre-performance discussion with KPFA radio personality and world music expert Sandy Miranda will take place at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $36/$32 adults; $18/$16 Stanford students. Half-price tickets are available for people age 15 and under and discounts are available for students. Palo Alto Philharmonic
The Palo Alto Philharmonic will perform on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Cubberley Theatre, 4000 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. The concert will feature pianist Masanobu Ikemiya in a performance of Beethoven's Concerto No. 5, "The Emperor." Also featured in the program will be Verdi's dramatic "Overture to La Forza del Destino" and Barber's "Adagio for Strings."

DANCE
Smuin Ballet
The Smuin Ballet will present "Fly Me to the Moon" on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Mountain View Center for the performing Arts. The program will showcase nine dances choreographed by Michael Smuin and set to music sung by Frank Sinatra. The evening will also include three new works by Smuin Ballet dancers Shannon Hurlburt, Amy Seiwert and Celia Fushille-Burke.
