OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Atherton resident and Castilleja grad Jackie Nguyen vaulted a career-best 13-4 1/2 and finished second in the women's pole vault at the Tyson Invitational indoor track and field meet on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. Nguyen won the United Heritage Invitational a week earlier in Boise, Idaho, with a clearance of 13-3 1/2 . . . Two-time Olympic medalists in doubles luge, Brian Martin of Palo Alto and Mark Grimmette of Muskegon, Mich., will be among the 14 American sliders who'll compete this weekend at the 38th World Luge Championships in Park City, Utah. Grimmette and Martin, who have raced to three world championship bronze medals, finished fourth in the final 2005 overall World Cup rankings.


CORRECTION . . . Stanford senior Ian Dobson was left off the list of local qualifiers for the 2005 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Wednesday's paper. Dobson finished sixth in the Open Men's 12K at the USA Cross Country Championships last weekend in Vancouver, Wash., to earn a trip to Saint Galmier, France - site of the World Championships on March 19-20. Dobson, an eight-time All-American, clocked 37:33 to claim the final berth. Also qualifying were Stanford grads Lauren Fleshman and Donald Sage; Cardinal freshmen Hakon DeVries and Lindsay Flacks plus Washington freshman Jeremy Mineau from Menlo-Atherton High.


OAKS' CORNER . . . Menlo College women's wrestler Sara Fulp-Allen left for Paris on Monday to take part in the Grand Prix De La Ville de Tourcoing De Lutte Feminie, an international female wrestling tournament that will feature wrestlers from 20 countries world wide. Menlo coach Lee Allen will serve as the USA coach and team leader. Fulp-Allen, the top-ranked wrestler at 48 kilograms in the NAIA, placed at the Dave Schultz International meet held in Colorado Springs two weeks ago . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team lost at Dominican, 56-50, in Cal Pac Conference action on Tuesday. After being held scoreless through the first 10 minutes and falling behind 11-0, the Oaks (10-13, 9-6) rallied within two at 21-19. Menlo hosts William Jessup on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Oaks honor lone senior Kyle Arneson as part of Senior Night . . . The Menlo College women's basketball team dropped a 61-44 decision to host Dominican (14-0, 26-3) in Cal Pac Conference action on Tuesday. Kepua Lee had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Oaks. Menlo (10-5, 15-8) hosts William Jessup on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Senior Night will feature tributes to Cindy Epps and Maria Gomez. Gomez is Menlo's career scoring leader . . . The Menlo College men's wrestling team hosts the NAIA Western Regional Wrestling Championships on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The event will feature four of the top 12 schools in the country in No. 12 Simon Fraser, No. 10 Southern Oregon, No. 5 Embry Riddle and the eighth-rnaked Oaks. Menlo is the reigning region champions, and feature three wrestlers ranked in the top eight in their weight class. Junior Artem Krylov is third at 157 pounds, junior Mariano Sanchez is sixth at 197 pounds and sophomore Jacob Hallmark is the fourth-ranked heavyweight . . . The Menlo College baseball game on Tuesday was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Tuesday, April 5 at 2:30 p.m. The Oaks play at Chapman in a three-game series beginning Friday at 2:30 p.m.


JUNIOR HOOPS . . . Hillview School of Menlo Park captured the Atherton Lions/SANCRA 41st annual Boys 8th Grade Basketball Tournament at Cubberley Pavilion last weekend. Hillview won the championship game over Burlingame Intermediate School, 48-30. Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School defeated Terman Middle School, 46-38, for fifth place. Peter Defilipps of Hillview was named to the all-tournament first team, as was Kyle Perricone of JLS. Nick Robinson of Terman made the second team.
