CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford grads Randal Bal and Tara Kirk each won two events at the FINA Short Course Swimming World Cup in East Meadows, N.Y. Bal won the 50 back in 23.80 and the 200 back in 1:53.06, while Kirk won the 50 breast in 30.85 and the 200 breast in 2:25.45. Stanford grad Peter Marshall finished second in the 50 back in 23.97 and fourth in the 200 back in 1:57.28 . . . Stanford grad Joel Kribel was the pro half of the winning AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am division over the weekend. Teaming with Barry McCollam, the duo shot a net best ball 35-under-par. Kribel went 72-70-68-70-280, 8-under-par . . . Stanford product Laura Granville beat Yoon Jeong Cho, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6), in the championship match of the $75,000 Dow Corning Tennis Classic in Midland, Mich. on Sunday. The third set went to a tie-break where Granville hit an overhead smash to go up a break and serve for the match. Cho broke directly back and served to stay in the match. Cho's forehand went long at 6-7 and Granville joyously shouted. Former Cardinal Teryn Ashley lost in the first round to semifinalist Sybille Bammer . . . Stanford grads KJ Hippensteel and Paul Goldstein are both entered in this week's $50,000 Freeman Men's Challenger tennis tournament in Joplin, Mo. Hippensteel is the No. 3 seed while Goldstein, who qualified for the SAP Open and lost to eventual champion Andy Roddick in the first round, is seeded fourth.
OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Five local runners qualified for the 2005 IAAF World Cross Country Championships on March 19-20 in Saint Galmier, France, by placing among the top six at last weekend's USA Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, Wash. Stanford grad Lauren Fleshman of Palo Alto made the U.S. team in two events, finishing fifth in the Open Women's 4K (13:30.9) and sixth in the 8K (28:11). Stanford senior Donald Sage was third in the Open Men's 4K (11:40.7) while Stanford's Hakon DeVries was third (25:27.7) and Menlo-Atherton High grad Jeremy Mineau was sixth (25:40) in the Junior Men's 8K. Stanford freshman Lindsay Flacks also qualified by taking fourth (22:05.4) in the Junior Women's 6K, a race where Gunn senior Tori Tyler finished 12th in 22:40.2. Stanford grad Jonathon Riley of Palo Alto just missed making the USA team after placing seventh in the Open Men's 4K . . . Atherton resident and Castilleja grad Jackie Nguyen vaulted a career-best 13-4 1/2 and finished second in the women's pole vault at the Tyson Invitational indoor track and field meet on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. Nguyen won the United Heritage Invitational a week earlier in Boise, Idaho, with a clearance of 13-3 1/2.
OAKS' CORNER . . . Menlo College women's wrestler Sara Fulp-Allen left for Paris on Monday to take part in the Grand Prix De La Ville de Tourcoing De Lutte Feminie, an international female wrestling tournament that will feature wrestlers from 20 countries world wide. Menlo coach Lee Allen will serve as the USA coach and team leader. Fulp-Allen, the top-ranked wrestler at 48 kilograms in the NAIA, placed at the Dave Schultz International meet held in Colorado Springs two weeks ago . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team won twice in Cal Pac Conference action over the weekend, beating host Cal State Maritime, 84-51, on Saturday and topping visiting Pacific Union, 83-66, on Sunday. James Gilkey lead the Oaks (10-12, 10-5) with 17 points against Pacific Union, while Bryon Wesley added 16 points and Kyle Arneson had 13 . . . The Menlo College women's basketball team also won twice, downing host Cal State Maritime, 69-32, on Saturday and defeating visiting Pacific Union, 75-36, on Sunday. Nicole Johnson scored 12 points against the Keelhaulers, and then added 11 points in the win over Pacific Union. The Oaks (11-5, 15-7) held Cal State Maritime to a .267 shooting percentage . . . The Menlo College baseball swept three games from host Simpson over the weekend, winning Friday 21-5, before taking both games of a doubleheader, 10-0 and 13-1, on Saturday. The Oaks (7-1) hit four home runs: Dan Rico, Jim Goethals, Garret Rodgers, and Anthony Dickerson. In game one, Jefferson Bradshaw and Conor Patterson each hit a home run in support of winning pitcher Jason Bynum, who gave up one hit over five innings, striking out four. He did not issue a walk. In game two, the Oaks took a 6-0 lead in the first inning, with senior Gary Mullins highlighting the scoring with his first home run of the year, a two-run shot . . . The Menlo College softball team (4-4) swept a doubleheader, 2-0 and 8-1, from host Claremont on Sunday after losing both games of a doubleheader, 8-0 and 9-0, on Saturday.
