HOOP CHAMPS . . . A steal and a layin by Patrick Osagiede with 40 seconds remaining in regulation sent the game to overtime, where Jane Lathrop Stanford prevailed, 45-40, over Terman in the championship game of the ADAL Eighth Grade Boys A Basketball playoffs recently at Terman in Palo Alto. Terman led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter and had a seven-point lead with a minute remaining. But the JLS rally was keyed by a 3-pointer by Max Minowitz, two free throws and Osagiede's basket. Free throws by Stephan Castro and Kyle Perricone sealed the victory in overtime. JLS was led by Perricone's 20 points, followed by Minowitz and Osagiede with 10 each. Nicolas Robinson led Terman with 13 points, with teammate Larry Jackson getting 12 points. It was the third straight league title for JLS, which also won the crown as sixth- and seventh-graders. The Panthers reached the title game with a 46-42 win over Borel of San Mateo, in which Perricone had 27 points. Other members of the JLS team are James Barnett, Zack Blumenfeld, Gus Brennan, Jason Chu, Sean Hodson, Nick Holodniy and Aaron Johnson. The Terman roster also includes Ishan Bhadkamkar, Matt Bowden, Nick Crevelli, McKay Danes, Nick Garrison, Will Holder, Avery Reiss and Mike Shubat.
SIGNUPS AND TRYOUTS . . . Palo Alto Babe Ruth will host an open tryout for the 2005 baseball season on Saturday at the Gunn High baseball field. Players 14 and 15 years of age try out at 9:30 a.m., followed by 13 year olds at noon. Residents of Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Portola Valley, Atherton, Menlo Park, Woodside and Redwood City are eligible to try out. Registration is $250. The Palo Alto Soccer Club will hold open tryouts for Class 1 and Class 3 boys and girls U10-U14 (in the fall) teams on Sunday on the Cubberley Community Center fields. COACHING CORNER . . . Palo Alto High is searching for a JV softball coach for this spring.
