Worth a Look Worth a Look (February 04, 2005)

THEATER
Palo Alto Children's Theatre
"The Prince and the Pauper" will open tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Palo Alto Children's Theatre. Based on Mark Twain's classic work, this dramatized version by Travis Tyre chronicles Prince Edward, son of Henry VIII, who switches places with a pauper for a brief period of time. The Children's Theatre last presented this classic in 1944.

Additional show times are Feb. 5 at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 10 at 4:30 p.m.; Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 12 at 2:30 p.m. The Palo Alto Children's Theatre is located at 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. Tickets are $6 adults; $3 children and are available through the Children's Theatre box office Tuesdays through Saturdays from 1:30 to 6 p.m. or by phone, (650) 463-4970.

MUSIC
Pan-Asian Music Festival
The first annual Pan Asian Music Festival will run Feb. 8-12 at Stanford University. Presented by the Department of Music, the festival will include five events, all taking place at Dinkelspiel Auditorium. The festival will debut on Tuesday at 8 p.m., with a concert of classical Asian music featuring sitarist Habib Khan and Xiaofen Min on pipa (a Chinese instrument distantly related to a lute).

Other events include a full orchestral program of new works by three Asian composers, in conjunction with an installation piece by one of the resident artists associated with the Cantor Art Center's new "On The Edge" show of Chinese art. There will also be an evening of film and discussion with Oscar-winning director Allan Miller ("From Mao to Mozart," "The Turandot Project"), and a visit from the Los Angeles-based On Ensemble of taiko drummers.

Tickets are $10 general; $5 with student ID. Proceeds will benefit the Stanford Student Relief committee for tsunami relief, earmarked for Save the Children. For more information please visit http://music.stanford.edu.

The "First Friday Art Walk" will take place tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. in downtown Palo Alto. ART
Nathan Oliviera
"Essence of Form," an exhibition of etchings by Nathan Oliveira, will run through March 31 at the Community School of Music and Arts' Mohr Gallery. The exhibition features 28 prints, created over 10 years in the studios of Crown Point Press and Trillium Press. There will be an opening reception for Oliviera tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m., which will be free and open to the public

Oliviera is a painter and printmaker who recently retired from a long teaching career at Stanford University.

The Community School of Music and Arts is located at 230 San Antonio Circle in Mountain View. The Mohr Gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information please call (650) 917-6800 or visit www.arts4all.org.

DANCE
Teen Dance Company
Teen Dance Company will perform on Saturday at 3 and 7 p.m. at Cubberley Auditorium, 4000 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. Entitled "Second Stage," the performance will feature modern dance works choreographed by students.
