SIGNUPS AND TRYOUTS . . . Palo Alto Babe Ruth will host an open tryout for the 2005 baseball season on Saturday and Feb. 12 at the Gunn High baseball field. Players 14 and 15 years of age try out at 9:30 a.m., followed by 13 year olds at noon. Residents of Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Portola Valley, Atherton, Menlo Park, Woodside and Redwood City are eligible to try out. Registration is $250. The Palo Alto Soccer Club will hold open tryouts for Class 1 and Class 3 boys and girls U10-U14 (in the fall) teams, weekends Feb. 5-13, on the Cubberley Community Center fields. OAKS OPEN WITH WIN . . . The Menlo College baseball team opened the season with a 20-0 victory over visiting Simpson on Wednesday as Scott Bowman, Derek Kinzler and Jefferson Bradshaw each hit home runs. Colby Henard allowed two hits over five innings, striking out eight, to earn the pitching victory. Shane Mott, Kyle Jaquez, Brian Lamont and Gabe Duran each pitched an inning of no-hit relief. Matt Gagliardi had three hits and drove in three runs. Menlo hosts Bethany today at 2 p.m., and in a noon doubleheader on Saturday . . . Saturday's Cal State Fullerton at Menlo wrestling match has been cancelled due to a variety of circumstances.


COACHING CORNER . . . Palo Alto High is searching for a new JV softball coach for this spring and a girls' water polo head coach for the 2005 season. Menlo-Atherton and Woodside highs are looking for coaches for their varsity girls' lacrosse teams this spring. Both are paid positions. For M-A, contact Mary at 854-4920 or Wachtelfam@aol.com. For Woodside, contact Donna at 365-6404 or dblosey116@aol.com. Menlo-Atherton also needs a girls' JV lacrosse coach and a frosh-soph softball coach. Basketball and soccer coaches (for boys and girls) are needed at St. Elizabeth Seton School in Palo Alto. Interested coaches should contact Pat Foy at 326-9004 . . . Menlo School has openings for girls' softball coaches: a varsity assistant, head frosh-soph and frosh-soph assistant. The season runs from February to May. For more information: 593-3895 . . . BASEBALL HONORS . . . Palo Alto High grad David Stringer will be among a handful of local baseball players honored at the annual Santa Clara County Hot Stove Banquet on Feb. 10 at the G.I. Forum, 765 Story Road, in San Jose. Stringer, a right-handed pitcher who led the Vikings into the Central Coast Section Division I finals and now is on the roster at Stanford University, will be honored as the 2004 high school Scholastic Athlete of the Year. Stanford's Jed Lowrie will be honored as last season's Bay Area College Player of the Year while Cardinal graduates Ryan Garko and John Hudgins will be honored as Major League Baseball's Minor League Players of the Year. Also in attendance will be San Francisco Giants' manager Felipe Alou, former St. Francis High and current Oakland A's start Eric Byrnes of Portola Valley and former Stanford star Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees. The banquet gets under way at 5:30 with dinner at 6:45 p.m. and the awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $35.
