STEGNER REMEMBERED . . . The exhibit on the life and work of the late Wallace Stegner at the Los Altos History Museum will include a talk on Feb. 10 by Nancy Huddelston Packer on Stegner, "Throwing a Long Shadow." Packer, an author and professor emerita of English at Stanford, was a student of Stegner's when he taught in Stanford's Creative Writing Program. Packer's talk will be at 7:30 p.m. The museum is located at 51 South San Antonio Road.

POETIC NOTES . . . Palo Alto native Brigit Pegeen Kelly has been nominated as a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle award for her volume of poetry, "The Orchard." And local writer Phil Lumish has written a book of poetry, "Shadows and Shades."

ACADEMIC-MINDED . . . Edith Gelles, a senior scholar at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at Stanford, has published "The Letters of Abigaill Levy Franks, 1733-1748," one of the earliest collections of letters by a woman in colonial America and among the earliest by a Jewish woman. Anita and Solomon Feferman of Stanford have co-authored "Alfred Tarksi: Life and Logic," a biography of the logician and mathematician who taught at UC Berkeley for 40 years. Solomon Feferman was his Ph.D. student in the 1950s.

OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Corey D. Maley of Palo Alto, who teaches at Woodside High School, has written "The Dream Unfurled: A Manifesto for Millennial America," which is available online. Jadan Miranz of Palo Alto has written "Chloe's Kingdom," a children's book. Another Palo Alto writer, Cynthia Chin-Lee, has written "Amelia to Zora: Twenty-six Women Who Changed the World," also a children's book.

AUTHOR, AUTHOR . . . Author events at Kepler's Books in Menlo Park this month include Stanford's Fred Luskin ("Stress Free for Good") at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16. Robert MacNeil of the MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour on PBS and author ("Do You Speak American?") will appear at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21. And Oxford University physicist and mathematician Sir Roger Penrose ("The Road to Reality" A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe") will appear at 5 p.m. Feb. 26.

MORE AUTHOR, AUTHOR . . . Ron Carlson ("A Kind of Flying" and "The Speed of Light") will speak at Stanford University (Building 260, Room 113) at 7 p.m. Feb. 8. Carlson teaches creative writing.
