SAFE PEST CONTROL . . . Annie Joseph, of Our Water, Our World, will speak about pest control in the garden at the next meeting of the Garden Club of Los Altos on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 1:15 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 1040 Border Road, Los Altos. Members free, visitors $5.

GOT ORANGES? . . . If you've got extra oranges ready for picking, please call Joni Diserens of Village Harvest, at (650) 740-7725. She's coordinating volunteer efforts to pick local fruit on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers (with garden gloves, and trucks, if you've got them) will meet at the Foundation for Global Community, 222 High St., Palo Alto. Some fruit goes to the homeowner, some to the pickers, but most will be dropped off at Second Harvest Food Bank. NICE HOUSE GIFTS . . . Lori Stoia will teach her class on "Decorative Handmade Soaps" on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Palo Alto High School. Students are asked to bring a two-cup measuring cup, dish towel and lunch to class. Fee is $35 plus a $15 lab fee on the day of the class.
