OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team defeated visiting Cal State Maritime, 87-35, in a Cal Pac Conference game on Tuesday as freshman Janis Krums scored 14 points, including a 4-of-7 effort from long range. Menlo (5-2, 5-9) led by 20 at halftime, and then outscored Cal State Maritime, 43-11, in the second half. Junior Mike Bonillas had 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and four steals, while Ricky Butler had 11 points. Menlo took a 28-5 lead in the first 10 minutes, shooting 60 percent in the first half. The Oaks play at Bethany today at 7:30 p.m., preceded by the women's game at 5:30 p.m. . . . The Menlo College women's basketball team also beat the Keelhaulers, 82-18, as all 13 players saw at least 11 minutes of action. Felicia Thompson and Ashlynn Dolcini each scored 11 to pace the Oaks. The Lady Oaks (4-3, 8-6) forced 35 turnovers, with Dolcini making six steals. The Keelhaulers suited up just six players for the game, and shot .258 (8-of-31) . . . Menlo College sophomore Sara Fulp-Allen was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 48 kg class at the Lady Oak Invitational on Sunday in Atherton. Menlo finished third at the Invitational. Fulp-Allen also won twice on Saturday in a pair of dual meets held at Lincoln Junior High in Redwood City. The Oaks lost to Lassen, 29-8, and to Simon Fraser, 31-4 . . . Menlo College men's wrestlers Sergio Lopes (133 pounds) and Mariano Sanchez (197) won their respective divisions in Sunday's Invitational.
SIGNUPS AND TRYOUTS . . . The Palo Alto Knights' Pop Warner Football program, which has sent four teams to the Super Bowl, will hold their 2005 signups today at the Palo Alto Elks Club (4249 El Camino Real) from 5-7 p.m. Players age 7-15 may sign up and will be placed on rosters on a first-come-first-served basis. Players also may register online at www.paknights.com. Scholarships are available . . . The Stanford Vortex U-15 (in fall) Class 1 boys' soccer team is holding tryouts for the spring and fall seasons on Saturday and again Jan. 29, 1-3 p.m. at JLS. Palo Alto Babe Ruth will host an open tryout for the 2005 baseball season on Feb. 5 and Feb. 12 at the Gunn High baseball field. COACHING CORNER . . . Menlo-Atherton and Woodside highs are looking for coaches for their varsity girls' lacrosse teams this spring. Both are paid positions. SOFTBALL SIGNUPS . . . Registration continues for the Palo Alto Girls' Softball spring season and is open to all girls, ages 5-14, in Palo Alto and surrounding communities. Practices begin in March and will be followed by an active schedule of games through May. After the spring season, travel teams will be formed for girls who wish to play at a more competitive level. The focus of Palo Alto Girls' Softball is on teamwork sportsmanship, positive values and fun, while developing fundamental softball skills. The youngest players begin with T-ball. All practices are in Palo Alto, as all games for players 10-under. The older divisions (12-under and 14-under) will do some traveling during interleague games. Registration ends Jan. 31.
