OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team beat host Simpson College, 81-65, in Cal Pac Conference play on Friday as senior Kyle Arneson scored a season-high 20 points for the Oaks. Freshman Jay Eitel also scored a season-high 17 points. James Gilkey added 16, while junior Brandon Rogers grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds. The Oaks (4-2, 4-9) dropped a 73-64 decision to visiting Dominican on Saturday. Gilkey scored 18 points, 16 in the second half, while Eitel added 15 and Arneson had 13 . . . The Menlo College women's basketball team beat host Simpson College, 73-55, on Friday night. Senior Maria Gomez scored 15 points for the Oaks (7-6, 3-3), while junior Shannon Riley had 13 points and a game-high nine assists. The Oaks lost, 68-50, to visiting Dominican on Saturday. Freshman Kepua Lee scored 11 points and junior Ashlynn Dolcini added 10 . . . The Menlo men's wrestling team lost to visiting Southern Oregon, 30-15, on Saturday. Jeff Aguilar, Pablo Sanchez, Juan Roman and Jacob Hallmark won for the Oaks.
OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Members of the Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics (PASA) Swim Club were honored recently at the Pacific Association banquet. Scott Shea, who coaches the senior swimmers, received the George Haines Award as the coach of the year. Among the 2004 outstanding age-group swimmers honored were Maddy Schaefer (Girls 10-under), Brooke Bishop (Girls 17-18), Mark Higgins (Boys 11-12), Kameron Flores-Maxfield (Boys 13-14) and Alex Navarro (Boys 13-14) . . . The Stanford Vortex U-15 (in fall) Class 1 boys' soccer team is holding tryouts for the spring and fall seasons on January 22 and 29, 1-3 p.m. at JLS. COACHING CORNER . . . Menlo-Atherton and Woodside highs are looking for coaches for their varsity girls' lacrosse teams this spring. Both are paid positions. SOFTBALL SIGNUPS . . . Registration continues for the Palo Alto Girls' Softball spring season and is open to all girls, ages 5-14, in Palo Alto and surrounding communities. Practices begin in March and will be followed by an active schedule of games through May. After the spring season, travel teams will be formed for girls who wish to play at a more competitive level. The focus of Palo Alto Girls' Softball is on teamwork sportsmanship, positive values and fun, while developing fundamental softball skills. The youngest players begin with T-ball. All practices are in Palo Alto, as all games for players 10-under. The older divisions (12-under and 14-under) will do some traveling during interleague games. Registration ends Jan. 31.
