THURSDAY
"Shakespeare in Hollywood" will preview tonight and Friday at 8 p.m. at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. Presented by TheatreWorks, the play is a whimsical comedy in which Shakespeare's Puck and Oberon magically find themselves in Hollywood, appearing as themselves in the 1934 film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The play will open on Saturday at 8 p.m. and run through Feb. 13. Show times are Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. (no performance Feb. 8); Wednesdays through Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m. (8 p.m. only Jan. 22 and Feb. 12); Sundays at 2 and 7 p.m. (2 p.m. only Feb. 6 and 13). "Visual Voice" audio-described performances are available Feb. 11-12 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20-$50; discounts are available for youth, students, seniors, and members. Forever Plaid" will run through Feb. 12 at Bus Barn Theatre, 97 Hillview Ave. in Los Altos. Conceived by Stuart Ross, the musical revue centers on four male singers known as the Plaids, who are working their way to the top. The revue features 22 hit songs from the 1950s and early 1960s. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday on Jan. 23 and 30. Tickets are $28 for Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances; $22 for Sundays. Stellar Somerset Gallery presents an artist lecture by Teresa Stanley tonight from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Stanley will talk about the influences and themes in her earlier and current works. Wallace Stegner: Throwing a Long Shadow" will open today at the Los Altos History Museum and run through June 12. The retrospective will cover the life and influence of Stegner, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, teacher, environmentalist and Peninsula treasure. "Wit" will preview tonight at 8 p.m. at the Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. Presented by the Palo Alto Players, "Wit" centers on a professor of poetry who is losing her battle with ovarian cancer. Written by Margaret Edson, "Wit" won the Pulitzer Prize. It will open on Saturday at 8 p.m. and run through Feb. 6. Show times are 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $18 for tonight's preview; $22 for Sunday performances; $24 for Wednesday and Thursday performances; $25 for Friday evenings; $27 for Saturday evenings; $29 for Saturday's opening-night performance, with a gala to follow. Ailey II will perform tonight at 8 p.m. at Stanford's Memorial Auditorium. Led by former Alvin Ailey dancer Sylvia Waters, the company is comprised of 18- to 24-year-olds. The program will showcase a repertoire of works created between 1960 and 2003 by founder Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison (former Ailey dancer and current artistic director), as well as contemporary choreographers Igal Perry and Robert Battle. A post-performance discussion will be free and open to the public. The event will be presented by Stanford Lively Arts. Tickets are $40/$34/$26 for adults. "The Skin of Our Teeth" will open tonight at the Pear Avenue Theatre, 1220 Pear Ave. Unit K in Mountain View. Written by Thornton Wilder, the story focuses on the intrepid Antrobus family, who keep gamely saving the human race -- come hell or high water.
