OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo College men's basketball team downed host Pacific Union, 77-52, in Cal Pac action on Tuesday night. Junior James Gilkey led the way with 15 points and six rebounds. Byron Wesley added 11 points. The Oaks (3-1, 3-8) travel to Simpson today at 7:30 p.m. . . . The Menlo College women's basketball team beat host Pacific Union, 85-22, on Tuesday night in Cal Pac play. The Oaks outscored Pacific Union 46-5 in the second half. Freshman Francine Sorenson scored a season-high 17 points to lead the Oaks, who shot nearly 59 percent from the field in the second half. Juniors Nicole Johnson and Shannon Riley each scored 12 points (with Riley adding 10 assists) while senior Maria Gomez and junior Ashlynn Dolcini each had 11. Junior Arpi Babakhanyan grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. Menlo (2-2, 6-5) travels to Simpson today for a 5:30 p.m. contest.

COACHING CORNER . . . Menlo-Atherton and Woodside highs are looking for coaches for their varsity girls' lacrosse teams this spring. Both are paid positions. Palo Alto High is searching for a new girls' water polo head coach for the 2005 season. CARDINAL CORNER . . . The NCAA Honors Dinner program honored Stanford grad Sally Ride, the first woman in space with the Theodore Roosevelt Award on Sunday. Also recognized with Today's Top VIII award for their contributions to the classroom, community and collegiate athletics were Stanford grad Tara Kirk and Stanford senior Ogonna Nnamani. Ride, who pursued a professional tennis career before enrolling at Stanford, earned four degrees on The Farm, including a PhD in Physics. She joined the astronaut corps in 1978. Kirk, who graduated in the spring, is an Olympic medal winner and NCAA champion in swimming, while Nnamani played with the U.S. women's volleyball team in the 2004 Olympics . . . Senior setter Kevin Hansen was named to the All-Tournament Team following the Elephant Bar men's volleyball Tournament in Santa Barbara, after helping the Cardinal to a fourth place finish.

SOFTBALL SIGNUPS . . . Registration continues for the Palo Alto Girls' Softball spring season and is open to all girls, ages 5-14, in Palo Alto and surrounding communities. Practices begin in March and will be followed by an active schedule of games through May. After the spring season, travel teams will be formed for girls who wish to play at a more competitive level. The focus of Palo Alto Girls' Softball is on teamwork sportsmanship, positive values and fun, while developing fundamental softball skills. The youngest players begin with T-ball. All practices are in Palo Alto, as all games for players 10-under. The older divisions (12-under and 14-under) will do some traveling during interleague games. Registration ends Jan. 31.
