OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo men's basketball team fell to host Fresno Pacific University, 69-45, in the first game of the Winter Classic on Friday night in Fresno. Jay Eitel led the Oaks with a season-high 12 points, as well as five rebounds and four assists. Mike Bonillas added 10 points. On Saturday, Menlo dropped an 89-76 decision to Lewis & Clark. Byron Wesley scored 20 points to lead Menlo. The Oaks (2-6) travel to Notre Dame de Namur for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Friday. . . The Menlo College women's basketball team fell to Madonna University, 75-64, in the finals of the Peninsula Hoops Classic on Friday. Junior Ashlynn Dolcini scored a season-high 17 points and had a season-high nine rebounds. Freshman Kepua Lee, named to the all-tournament team, added 13 points and six rebounds, while Shannon Riley scored 13 points and had six assists for the Lady Oaks (4-5). Maria Gomez added 11 points. Menlo travels to Notre Dame de Namur for a 5:30 p.m. Cal Pac contest on Friday.


NOTEWORTHY . . . The United States Youth National men's water polo team finished third at the NorAm Tournament in Victoria B.C. Canada on Friday with a 14-9 victory over New Zealand. Menlo School senior Jimmie Sandman led all goalies with 103 saves in seven games, including 18 in the third-place contest. Sandman, the Central Coast Section Player of the Year, will be attending Stanford in the fall. Gunn senior Arjan Ligtenburg, also an all-CCS selection, scored a goal in the tournament. The U.S. recorded a 4-1 mark in pool play, outscoring its opponents, 52-36. The Americans dropped a 7-6 decision to Canada in the semifinals on a last-second goal.


SOFTBALL SIGNUPS . . . Registration is now open for the Palo Alto Girls' Softball spring season and is open to all girls, ages 5-14, in Palo Alto and surrounding communities. Practices begin in March and will be followed by an active schedule of games through May. After the spring season, travel teams will be formed for girls who wish to play at a more competitive level. The focus of Palo Alto Girls' Softball is on teamwork sportsmanship, positive values and fun, while developing fundamental softball skills. The youngest players begin with T-ball. All practices are in Palo Alto, as all games for players 10-under. The older divisions (12-under and 14-under) will do some traveling during interleague games. Registration ends Jan. 31.
