THURSDAY

Wallace Stegner: Throwing a Long Shadow" will open today at the Los Altos History Museum and run through June 12. The retrospective will cover the life and influence of Stegner, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, teacher, environmentalist and Peninsula treasure. An opening reception will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Regular viewing hours are Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. "Striking 12" will run through Jan. 8 at the Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. Presented by TheatreWorks, the show is a rewired version of Han Christian Anderson's classic tale, "The Little Match Girl." The musical will be performed by alternative rock trio GrooveLily and will feature a mix of theater and live tunes. Show times are Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20-$50, with discounts available for youth, students, seniors and members. "3 Artists," featuring paintings by Richard Godinez, and Stephen Osborn and drawings and paintings by Masako Miki, will run through Feb. 10 at the Center for Integrated Systems Art Spaces, located on the Stanford University campus. "Art of the Harlem Renaissance" will be the subject of a lecture tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Community School of Music and Arts at Finn Center, Tateuchi Hall, 230 San Antonio Circle in Mountain View. The lecture will be given by Professor Bridget R. Cooks of Santa Clara University, who teaches in both the art and art history departments and the ethnic studies program. SATURDAY

"The Wedding Project" will be presented tonight at 5 p.m. at Stanford's Roble Gym, 375 Santa Teresa St. Presented by the Committee on Black Performing Arts at Stanford, the performance will lead the audience through the many phases of a wedding ceremony. The Nova Vista Symphony will perform tonight at 8 p.m. at Foothill College's Smithwick Theater. The program will feature American music: "An Outdoor Adventure" and Hoe-Down from "Rodeo," both by Aaron Copland; "Someone to Watch Over Me" by George Gershwin; John Philip Sousa's "Washington Post March;" "American Salute" by Morton Gould; "Symphonic Scenario" from Richard Rogers' "South Pacific;" and finally a Duke Ellington medley, a salute to the Big Bands, and "Star Trek Through the Years," the latter three arranged by Calvin Custer. The Fortnightly Music Club will celebrate its 97th anniversary tonight at 8 p.m. at the Palo Alto Art Center. The concert will showcase guitarist Babak Falsafi (performing works by Dioniso Aguado, Fernando Sor, J.Kaspar Mertz and Francisco Tarrega); soprano Edith Zitelli and pianist Susan Gross Bratman (performing works by Franz Schubert); and pianist Brett Waxdeck, who will perform works by Leos Janacek and Bela Bart?k.
