Nancy Jones
Nancy Francis Jones, 73, a 42-year resident of Atherton, died Dec. 29 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
She was born Nancy Jean Francis in Cambridge, Mass., on June 27, 1931. She grew up in Woodbury, N.J., and majored in textiles and apparel at Cornell University, where she met her husband, Paul Jones. They married following her junior year, and moved to San Diego, the homeport of her husband's ship. She completed her work at Cornell in bits and pieces and graduated in February 1954.
She moved to San Francisco in December 1952 and had lived in the Bay Area since, except for short periods in New York City in 1956 and Atlanta in the mid-1970s. She moved to Atherton in March 1963.
She dedicated her life to the service of others, making major contributions to the parent-teacher organizations of Encinal School and Menlo-Atherton High School. She was active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW), where she served two terms as president of the local branch.
She edited the newsletter of the League of Women Voters for many years. She was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, serving one term on the session and three terms as a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto.
She was a talented artist, a gourmet cook and a gardener. She studied Japanese brush painting for many years. Over their long residence, she and her husband largely rebuilt their Atherton home, incorporating many of her design ideas and much of her hard work. She loved to travel -- she visited all 50 states and 60 foreign countries.
In addition to her husband of 53 years, she is survived by her daughter, Lucy E. Jones of Hartwick, N.Y.; son, Richard L. Jones of Atherton; son, Peter D. Jones of Auburn, Ala.; son, Philip K. Jones of Orefield, Penn.; son, Andrew D. Jones of Richardson, Texas; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto, 1140 Cowper St., Palo Alto. Memorial donations may be sent to Pathways Hospice Foundation, 201 San Antonio Circle, Suite 104, Mountain View, CA 94040; the AAUW Education Foundation, 1109 Valparaiso Ave., Menlo Park, CA 94025; or the First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto.
Dalton Morrow
Dalton Spencer Morrow, 44, a longtime former resident of Palo Alto, died Dec. 25.
He was born June 5, 1960, to Hue Spencer Morrow and Dilmar Correia Oliveira Robinson. As a young boy, he attended Nueva Day School in Hillsborough, Calif. He continued his schooling at Ventura Elementary, Terman Jr. High and Gunn High School. He graduated from Gunn in 1978.
After graduating, he studied architectural drafting in San Jose. He held various positions in corporate management and carpentry. He was a very talented carpenter and electrician and took pride in his work.
He enjoyed many visits to the beach, dancing to the blues, barbecues, his family, and his beloved dogs and cats. He loved fast cars, adventure and living life to the fullest. He had a compassionate heart and despised conflict. He was a selfless giver, providing for numerous families and children in need. His spirit was unfaltering, spreading his smile, laughter and love to everyone he met.
He is survived by his son, Derek; mother, Dilmar Correia Oliveira Robinson; father, Hue Spencer Morrow; brother, Craig Robinson; sister, Cynthia Coleman; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins, and two godmothers.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at Roller, Hapgood and Tinney, 980 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Internment to follow at Alta Mesa Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
David Nunn
David Nunn, 51, a longtime resident of the Bay Area, died Dec. 26 in San Mateo.
He was born Dec. 5, 1953, attended the Bread of Life Worship Center and studied at the College of San Mateo. He was a counselor for Project 90 in San Mateo and in 2004 was awarded "Man of the Decade" by his peers. He enjoyed gardening, gaming, traveling and camping.
He is survived by sister, Joyce Lee of Los Banos; sister, Gloria Nunn of East Palo Alto; brother, Dorsey Nunn, and wife, Sheila, of Menlo Park; and brother, Ronald Nunn, and wife, Sylvia, of Sacramento.
A quiet hour was held Jan. 2. Funeral services were held Jan. 3 at St. John Baptist Church in East Palo Alto.
Kenneth J. Sigman
Kenneth J. Sigman, 60, a 28-year resident of Palo Alto, died suddenly at the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia Nov. 24.
He was born March 15, 1944, in Denver, Colo., and was raised there. He was a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School. Following Harvard, he spent eight years in Chicago at Quaker Oats. In California, he was vice-president of marketing at Gap Stores, Inc., from 1976 to 1983 and at La Petite Boulangerie from 1983 to 1985. He later co-founded ArtTextures, an apparel printing company. He had been semi-retired since 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Caroline, and son, Ryan of Palo Alto; mother, Vivienne Sigman of Palm Desert; and sister, Tari Bowman, and family, of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
A memorial service is planned for early spring.
Winona Waites
Winona T. Waites, 97, a longtime resident of Menlo Park, died Dec. 26 peacefully at her home in Palo Alto.
She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. She graduated at the age of 19 from the University of British Columbia with a degree in mathematics.
During World War II, she and her husband came to California and became United States citizens. She was active in the Stanford Mothers' Club and the American Association of University Women.
She is survived by her brother, Byron Straight of Vancouver, B.C.; sister, Norma Straight of Vancouver, B.C.; daughter, Margaret Bergeson; son, Robert Waites; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Her husband, G. Frank Waites, preceded her in death.
At her request, no services were held.
