PREP HOOPS . . . The Palo Alto boys' basketball team (6-0) won its second straight tournament last weekend by outscoring three opponents by an average score of 77-33 to capture the annual Cougar Classic at Half Moon Bay. Senior Greg Walder was named MVP after scoring 43 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and shooting 75 percent from the field. Senior teammate Brian Baskauskas was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 41 points, including 25 in a 78-43 romp over San Lorenzo in the championship game. The Sacred Heart Prep boys (3-0, 5-1) won a pair of Private Schools Athletic League games, 56-40 over Redwood Christian and 72-29 over Woodside Priory, as junior guard Pat Coffey tallied 47 points. Mid-Peninsula (5-4) reached the championship game of the Valley Christian Tournament before falling to Mission San Jose. Walter Washington and Jamar Williams made the all-tournament team. Menlo-Atherton went 1-2 in the Gridley Tournament, with Dan Trautman making the all-tournament team as the tourney's high scorer with 79 points. Gunn sophomore Peter Jordan scored 60 points and made the all-tournament team in the Burlingame Lions Club tournament . . . The Pinewood girls' basketball team reached the finals of the Notre Dame-Belmont Holiday Classic before falling to Sacred Heart Cathedral, 51-48. Daniela Roark tallied 43 points to lead the Panthers (2-1). Sacred Heart Prep (8-1), which fell to Pinewood in the semifinals, 48-41, bounced back to claim third place as freshman Hannah Stephens scored 16 points in a 51-44 win over Notre Dame-Belmont. Menlo-Atherton (5-2) reached the finals of the Sonoma Lady Dragons Invitational before falling. Christina Dixon made the all-tournament team. Menlo School (3-1) reached the finals of the Crystal Springs Uplands Tournament before being edged in the title game, 39-37, by Thurgood Marshall. The Knights' Julia Martin and Konstance Kirkendoll made the all-tournament team.


CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford senior tight end Alex Smith was named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America Second-Team. Smith completed his Cardinal career as the most prolific receiving tight end in school history with 107 receptions for 1,291 yards and eight touchdowns . . . Stanford senior goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart and junior defender Hayley Hunt were named to the NSCAA/adidas women's NCAA Division I All-America soccer team. Barnhart was voted to the first team, while Hunt earned second team honors. Barnhart, a two-time first-team All-American, finished the year with a 0.44 goals against-average after allowing only 10 goals in 22 games. Barnhart completed her collegiate career ranked No. 1 in school history with a 0.452 goals against-average and No. 2 in career shutouts with 39, one shy of the school record . . . The third-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics squad will hold its annual intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday at 4:30 pm in the Ford Center. The scrimmage is free to the public.


NOTEWORTHY . . . Palo Alto resident Brian Martin and his luge partner Mark Grimmette won two gold medals over the weekend in Calgary to up their U.S. best international medals total to 48. On Friday, the pair won the doubles event in 1:28.332 and moved into third place in the overall rankings heading into this week's international training week in Park City, Utah. Martin and Grimmette were also part of Saturday's winning team relay event . . . Stanford grad Markus Rogan won two events and finished second in two others at the European short course men's swimming meet in Vienna over the weekend. The Austria native won the 200 back in 1:51.24, the 200 IM in 1:55.15 and finished second in the 100 back in 50.80, and second in the 100 IM in 53.54. Rogan was a two-time Olympic silver medalist while attending Stanford.


COACHING CORNER . . . Basketball and soccer coaches (for boys and girls) are needed at St. Elizabeth Seton School in Palo Alto. Interested coaches should contact Pat Foy at 326-9004 . . . Menlo School has openings for girls' softball coaches: a varsity assistant, head frosh-soph and frosh-soph assistant. The season runs from February to May. For more information: 593-3895 . . . Sacred Heart Prep is looking for the following coaches: Varsity softball, varsity baseball and varsity girls' lacrosse. Castilleja School is looking for coaches for the upcoming season in varsity track and field in addition to an assistant coach for swimming.
