'Sideways' Wins Six Awards 'Sideways' Wins Six Awards (December 15, 2004)

The San Francisco Film Critics Circle has named the soulful comedy "Sideways" the best picture of 2004.

The film's star, Paul Giamatti, received the award for best actor, while Thomas Haden Church won best supporting actor for the same film. Their co-star, Virginia Madsen, won best supporting actress. Director Alexander Payne shared the honor for best screenplay with his co-writer, Jim Taylor. Payne was also named best director.

The group gave the best actress award to Julie Delpy for her work in "Before Sunset." Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" won the award for best documentary. "Maria Full of Grace," a tale of a South American teenager who becomes a drug mule, won best foreign language film.

Founded in 2002, the San Francisco Film Critics Circle is comprised of critics from 20 Bay Area publications, including Jeanne Aufmuth of the Palo Alto Weekly.
