OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Former Menlo School volleyball standouts Kim Gould and Nilly Schweitzer, who graduated in 2001, helped lead Harvard to its first ever Ivy League volleyball title this season. Gould and Schweitzer are both seniors and have played all four seasons for the Crimson Tide. Four former Menlo teammates -- Natalie Francis (Penn), Whitney Weinkoop (Northeastern), KC Conley (Emory) and Dana Twomey (Denison) - also just finished up their fourth seasons of collegiate volleyball . . . Former Palo Alto High soccer standout Bridget Stolee helped lead the University of Puget Sound into the NCAA Division III soccer championship this season. Stolee scored two goals in a 3-0 victory over Messiah College in the semifinals, which earned Puget Sound a berth in the finals against Wheaton College. The match ended at 1-1 in regulation, with Wheaton winning on penalty kicks. Stolee, a senior defender, earned Northwest Conference Player of the Year honors in both 2002 and 2003. She was a second-team All-American in '02 and a third-team selection in '03 . . . Current Menlo-Atherton High senior Laurie Roberts recently signed a national letter of intent to continue her track and field career (as a high jumper) at the University of Washington next fall . . . Palo Alto High senior Kelli Fangonilo has signed a national letter of intent to play softball for UNLV next season. Fangonillo is a three-time first-team all-league performer.
NOTEWORTHY . . . Palo Alto resident and former San Francisco 49ers' quarterback Steve Young and former Stanford All-American tennis great John McEnroe have been elected to the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. They be enshrined at BASHOF's annual banquet on April 13, 2005 at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco . . . Basketball and and soccer coaches (for boys and girls) are needed at St. Elizabeth Seton School in Palo Alto. Interested coaches should contact Pat Foy at 326-9004.
SOCCER NEWS . . . The MLA FireStorm and MVLA Earthquakes, Under-11 boys' teams in the Mountain View/Los Altos area, will hold a joint tryout for the 2005 season on Sunday for players born after Aug. 1, 1994. The FireStorm is a Class 3 CYSA team while the Earthquakes played in Class I in the fall. Interested players should contact Craig at 965-7511 or e-mail at www.mvlaU11b@earthlink.net.
COACHING CORNER . . . Menlo School has openings for girls' softball coaches: a varsity assistant, head frosh-soph and frosh-soph assistant. The season runs from February to May. For more information: 593-3895 . . . Sacred Heart Prep is looking for the following coaches: Varsity softball, varsity baseball and varsity girls' lacrosse. Those interested should contact Anthony Thomas, Athletic Director at 473-4031 . . . Castilleja School is looking for coaches for the upcoming season in varsity track and field in addition to an assistant coach for swimming. Menlo-Atherton High is looking for a number of coaches for the 2004-05 season: frosh-soph softball, girls' varsity lacrosse and girls' JV lacrosse.
