CARDINAL CORNER . . . The Stanford women's gymnastics team received its highest ranking ever on Tuesday as the coaches' poll had the Cardinal ranked third in the nation. The previous best was last year's No. 6 preseason rank. The Cardinal, who tied for third place with Alabama at last season's NCAA championship, received four first place votes and 554 total points, 11 behind No. 2 Georgia . . . Stanford senior women's basketball guard Kelley Suminski was nominated for the Bayer Advantage(r) Senior CLASS Award, presented annually to the nation's senior player-of-the-year for NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball. It is designed to honor the attributes of seniors who remain committed to their university. The list of the top30 female players will be narrowed down when a national media committee selects 10 finalists next February . . . Stanford men's gymnastics coach Thom Glielmi announced the signing of two recruits during the early signing period last week. Gregory Ter-Zakhariants and Bryant Hadden have signed national letters of intent to attend Stanford.

SOCCER NEWS . . . The MP Strikers FC Girls' Under-12 CYSA team is holding tryouts for players born after Aug. 1, 1992 on Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 from 4-5 p.m. at Lyle Field, Middle Avenue, Menlo Park. The MP Strikers FC Boys Under-10 team will hold tryouts for players born after Aug. 1, 1994 on the same field at the same times and days. The MLA FireStorm and MVLA Earthquakes, Under-11 boys' teams in the Mountain View/Los Altos area, will hold a joint tryout for the 2005 season on Sunday for players born after Aug. 1, 1994.
