SHRINE GAME . . . Senior tight end Alex Smith and senior free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe will represent Stanford in the East-West Shrine Game to be played at SBC Park, home to the San Francisco Giants, on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. The game, which features some of the top seniors in the nation, benefits Shriner's Hospitals for Children. Tickets can be purchased online at www.tickets.com, by phone at 510-762-2277, at local ticket.com outlets and at all Giants Dugout stores.

NOTEWORTHY . . . Palo Alto High senior Will Haydon finished third in the championship flight of the Palo Alto City Men's Golf tournament on Sunday. Haydon, who signed a letter of intent to attend UC Davis, shot a two-round round otal of 140 . . . Menlo-Atherton (5-4) hosts Woodside (9-0) in a non-league regular-season finale at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Bears need a win for a chance at an at-large berth in the CCS playoffs. A crowd of between 4,000-5,000 is expected . . . The Palo Alto Knights Junior Pee Wees Pop Warner football team plays East Bay West of Oakland for the PPWLS championship on Saturday at noon at Woodside. The winner advances to the Northwestern Regional championship.

THE MENLO BEAT . . . Menlo College senior Cindy Epps was named the Cal Pac women's volleyball Player of the Week for her effort in wind over William Jessup and Simpson last weekend. Epps had 21 combined kills in the matches and hit at a .643 clip. The Oaks (16-0, 19-2) host Dominican today at 7 p.m. and Notre Dame du Namur on Saturday at 7 p.m. Notre Dame's lone loss came to Menlo earlier in the season. "This is the biggest weekend for Menlo College volleyball in 15 years," Menlo coach Bill Imwalle said. "It's a little different for us, being the hunted instead of the hunter for the first time. I know we are up to the challenge."

HOOPS SEASON OPENS . . . Just call Santa Clara University "Stanford South," this weekend. In addition to the NCAA women's soccer tournament there, the Cardinal will play three exhibition basketball games on the Santa Clara campus in the Leavey Center this weekend as workers put the finishing touches on Maples Pavilion.The seventh-ranked women's team played Baden Sports on Thursday and meets Love and Basketball on Sunday at 2 p.m. The 25th-ranked men's team plays Concordia on Saturday at 1 p.m.

COACHING CORNER . . . Castilleja School is looking for coaches for the upcoming season in varsity track and field in addition to an assistant coach for swimming.
