ALL THAT JAZZ . . . The Art21 Gallery in Palo Alto will feature poetry and jazz at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12. Poets Stephen Kessler and F.A. Nettlebeck will read, accompanied by Jake Haskell on bass and Norm Copperman on piano. Sharon Olson will host. The gallery is located at 539 Alma St., at Hamilton Avenue, in downtown Palo Alto. It's sad to note that bass player Tim Enos was originally scheduled to play but passed away two weeks ago.


READING ABOUT HISTORY . . . The Menlo Park Library's November Library Book Club will feature the Thornton Wilder novel, "The Bridge of San Luis Rey," which has been made into four movies with a fifth now in production. The club meets at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 and serves chocolate chip cookies.


WHAT'S COOKING? . . . Kepler's Books in Menlo Park will host a series of chef-authors this month, beginning with Thomas Keller ("Bouchon") at 7 p.m. Nov. 10. Keller is the chef at the French Laundry restaurant. Anthony Bourdain ("Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook") will appear at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11. Harold McGee ("On Food and Cooking") and Howard Bulka will appear at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16. Bukla is the chef at Marche in Menlo Park. Nigella Lawson ("Feast: Food to Celebrate Life") appears at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19.


AUTHOR, AUTHOR . . . Author appearances at Kepler's Books in Menlo Park this month include novelist ("A Soldier of the Great War") and short story writer ("The Pacific and Other Stories," his new book) Mark Helprin at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9.
