AN ENGLISH NATIVE GARDEN? . . . Bart O'Brien will offer a slide show and class on "Creating an English Garden with California Natives" tomorrow, 10 a.m.-noon at Gamble Garden Carriage House and garden, 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto. His talk will focus on using drought-tolerant natives, such as clarkia, nemophila, salvia or ceanothus. His slides include famous English gardens, including Vita Sackville-West's Sissinghurst and Gertrude Jekyll's Hestercombe. Fee is $30 for non-members, $24 for members. 75 AND GOING STRONG . . . The Garden Club of Los Altos will celebrate its 75th birthday at its Tuesday, Oct. 26, meeting, at 12:45 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 1040 Border Road, Los Altos. Former presidents will be honored at a tea after the program, where Sunset Magazine garden editor Steve Lorton will talk about "Having Fun with the Holidays." The club now has 250 members, with the majority from Los Altos or Los Altos Hills. In honor of its anniversary, the club made donations this year to Foothill College's Environmental Horticulture program, for an arbor at the Los Altos History Museum and for two scholarship funds. BACK TO BASICS . . . Christof Bernau will teach a class on "Traditional Grains" tomorrow from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Common Ground, 559 College Ave., Palo Alto. Cost is $21.
