OAKS' CORNER . . . The Menlo College football program has been accepted into the Northwest Conference as an affiliate member. The Oaks will join current members Lewis and Clark, Linfield, Willamette, Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound and Whitworth . . . Menlo (1-3) hosts Whitworth in its homecoming game on Saturday at noon. The Oaks have lost three of four games played with the Pirates, including a 30-24 setback last year in Spokane. Freshman quarterback Dustin Guglielmelli, who threw for 92 yards in relief of Adam Hazel in Menlo's 32-22 loss to Cal Lutheran two weeks ago, will get his first career start . . . The Menlo College women's volleyball team swept a pair of nonconference games on Tuesday, beating Vassar College, 30-20, 30-20, 30-19, before knocking off host UC Santa Cruz, 33-20, 30-26, 26-30, 19-30, 19-17. Senior Cindy Epps recorded 19 kills against Vassar, while junior Kari Shimomura had 17 against the Banana Slugs. Christa Hewett recorded a phenomenal 41 digs against UC Santa Cruz while freshman setter Alyssa Chang had a combined 92 assists in the two matches. Menlo (14-2 overall) hosts Holy Names College on Friday at 7 p.m. in a California Pacific Conference match . . . The Menlo College men's soccer team lost to Holy Names, 3-1, on Monday and dropped a 2-1 decision to Dominican on Wednesday. The Oaks (4-3, 6-12) will participate in next week's conference playoffs.
THE NET RESULTS . . . Former Stanford tennis standout K.J. Hippensteel won the USTA Challenger in Tiburon on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kevin Kim . . . Two-time NCAA champion while at Stanford, Laura Granville won the USTA Challenger in Ashburn, Virginia on Sunday, beating Lucie Safarova, 6-4, 6-2 . . . Menlo-Atherton grad Hilary Englert, playing for Cal, reached the consolation finals of the St. Mary's Invitational with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nevada's Bach Lam Pham on Sunday.
OF LOCAL NOTE . . . Menlo School graduate K.C. Conley has been named Athlete of the Week after helping the Emory University women's volleyball team to a 4-0 record in the second round of the University Athletic Association round-robin tournament. The senior has nine service aces and 32 digs on the weekend, including 12 digs in a victory over New York University, ranked No. 1 in the nation in NCAA Division III. For the season, Conley leads Emory with 50 aces and is third in digs with 167. Conley ranks fourth in school history in career digs with 909 and is seventh in aces with 176. Emory is ranked No. 15 in the nation and finished 6-1 in the conference, earning a No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. Also playing on the Emory volleyball team is fellow Menlo grad Courtney Rose, a sophomore from Palo Alto.
NOTEWORTHY . . . Former Menlo College baseball player Matt Slavin has returned to the school as the new Sports Information Director. Slavin, a former assistant SID at the University of San Francisco, played baseball at Menlo College from 1990-92 before graduating with a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications. Slavin replaces Nicholas Enriquez, who left to become an assistant baseball coach at Dartmouth College.
CARDINAL CORNER . . . Stanford hosts the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Women's Regional Championships Friday through Sunday. The singles finalists and doubles champion advance to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November . . . The Stanford men's golf team hosts The Nelson Invitational Friday through Sunday at the Stanford Golf Course . . . The Stanford women's basketball team, the three-time defending Pac-10 conference champion, has been picked to win the 2005 title by conference coaches.
COACHING CORNER . . . The Palo Alto Recreation Department is seeking coaches for its volleyball, flag football and basketball programs at the middle school level. Volleyball and flag football begin in early September, and basketball begins in November. Coaches will work 4-5 days a week, with paid and volunteer positions available. Practices held in Palo Alto. Castilleja School is looking for coaches for the upcoming season in varsity track and field in addition to an assistant coach for swimming.
